I was leaving a smoothie shop with my son today. We had our smoothies in our hands and heading for the car. There was this young man dressed in a suit heading straight for us. I was sure he was a salesman because he was wearing a name badge. He was just about nose to nose with me and asked me if I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior. He identified himself as a missionary with the LDS church. I told him very politely, "no thank you", which would mean I'm not interested in what you have to say. Right? Well, he continued on asking me how important I thought it was to have religion in my life. Then he asked if I heard of the LDS church and kept walking after my son and I. I turned to him and said "I really don't have time for this right now and I'm not interested". He asked if I would like to schedule a meeting. Why do they do this? Why do they insist on pushing it? He seemed like a car salesman or something. Did he think he could convert me into another way of thinking/believing?

Try using him as a negative example for your child about how adults can act improperly toward one another.

Maybe the point that he's acting like a 2 year old will sink in.

...Completely ignore what the guy says or does. Turn DIRECTLY to your child, with your back to the nut. Ask the child something like, "Do you see what this person is doing, how they are being rude and overbearing... always wanting to have their own way?"

Still with your back to them, you'll probably have to move to maintain position... "How do we treat someone who acts like that toward us?" (ask leading questions to show the guy that a child knows better how to behave than he does... , make the child's obvious answer, "we ignore them")

Something like that may be able to get through to them.

Because they believe you won't go to their "Celestial Kingdom" if you don't become a mormon. They believe there are 3 levels of glory (heaven) and the celestial is the highest level. In their small little world they think that anyone who isn't mormon won't get to recieve the highest glory. The best thing to do is to tell them that you have no interest in their church, that you're happy with your religion. If they keep pushing their LDS nonsense politly ask them to leave you alone. Usually they'll leave at that point, oh..and don't take the book of mormon if they offer you one either, it gives them the hope that they might be able to convert you...

Maybe he wasn't aware of this passage from the Bible since the LDS church put's the Bible below their Book of Mormon.

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.

Though I don't believe in the church of the Latter Day Saints, I do understand that persistence.

Could be one of these reasons:

1. He gets personal satisfaction out of convincing people.

2. He really believes in the horrors of hell and loves people enough to do whatever it takes to keep them from going there. Put yourself in his shoes. Wouldn't you do the same, or would you just care about yourself?

That's actually pretty odd for an LDS missionary. I've yet to meet one who ever did that, rather they were always very respectful. If someone pulls that again, get their name and their supervisor's name, then call them.

I'm LDS and that seems pretty odd to me. Most of the time, if you say that you are not interested they leave you alone.

I have to agree with the poster who said this is rare for LDS missionaries. Usually, they will leave you alone after one/two rebuttals.

Most main stream Christians don't consider mormons (church of latter day saints) to be Christian, but more of a cult. Not all missionaries are like this, but most LDS missionaries are.

You can't be nice. I usually grab my crotch and say "right here" I am a big guy and ex military. They leave me alone after that. Anything other than the most rude harsh response, they keep going.

Acting gay and hitting on them is fun too.

Maybe he has a quota on how many people to convert in a day. It irritates me, too, and I would rather not justify how I live my faith to someone I do not even know from Adam.
