Many Christians here act bewildered as to why many atheists seem bitter. Surely Christians can appreciate that atheists are looked down upon for reasons that we think are totally undeserving. Christians have a history of being persecuted. Granted, atheists in the U.S. have not had any physical violence inflicted on us, and we still have many freedoms. But we have come close to losing some freedoms that we hold very dear, such as the freedom to conduct science without free of political bias, and to ensure that science is taught correctly in public schools. And this doesn't even include the fact that atheists have lowest chance of being elected to public office of any other group of people.

Finally, I encourage Christians to pay more attention to the variety of statements atheists make here. A lot of what we say is not bitter.

it's not surprising but not justified either . I put up with a lot of
derision for being an honest and intelligent atheist but I'm not bitter just frustrated and dismayed. Sour grapes are unbecoming even when falsely wronged. So I work at telling it with as little intentional hurting as possible, not that one can defy a belief that is considered wrong by indirectly stateing opposing views without hurting some ones sensitive side.

actually, political freedoms have been denied. In a few southern states a professed atheist is barred from holding public office.

and don't forget the president of the United States has said atheists are not patriots or true Americans. What do you think would have happened if that had been said about Christians, or blacks ...?

Some are bitter, but not all, but If a Atheist dose not agree with me I don't get "bitter" we [Christans} have been bashed beaten even murdered for our faith since the beginning, but we are not to get bitter."Jesus ask God to forgive those who crucified him, and he's our example.
Bottom line we all have free will and though I may have a concern for your soul {because of my faith} I have no right to be bitter or force it on you, but when asked I will tell you what I believe, and then the choice is up to you.
And I believe Atheist should also respect other ppls. belief's.What is fair for one is fair for the other.

that's not really a question, but it's a hot-button topic, so it flies.

i could go on and on about more Christians than atheists being in public office. Perhaps there are more candidates who are Christian, perhaps there are more voters who are Christian, or perhaps (gasp) God is putting His people in office.

Christians in power are really in a fix when it comes to bioethics (i assume that's what you mean when you talk about conducting scientific research). there is a duty to the state, which is to hold no religious bias (1st amendment), but there is also the duty to God, which is to protect human life (even unborn human life, as in abortion, stem cell research, test tube babies, etc.) the more important duty is to God, not man, which is unfortunate for atheists.

For anyone to act bitterly against anyone else is just wrong. God loves us all equally. If you are an atheist you do not believe in God, but guess what...that does not stop him from loving you. Because you are loved by God certainly no one who believes in God should be bitter toward you, and certainly Christians should know better.

Though an atheist, I would have to say Amen to that.

It is interesting you bring up being elected. In Texas, right in the Texas Consitution, it is stated for anyone to run for public office, they must acknowledge the existence of a supreme being.

We're working on getting that changed, but the outlook for now is grim.

If you want science taught correctly in schools, then tell them to quit lying to students about evolution; it is not a proven fact; in fact it is not very logical.
About the atheists being bitter, I never noticed.

The atheists I know are fairly happy. I know they have made their decision in what they believe and not push it, though I do pray. They actually do the same for me. They say; "Well, if there is a God, I put in a good word for you". :-D

I think the better word is discouraged...They are discouraged by continual judging and lack of being treated as an equal. And that really goes for all that are not the NORM.
