Cookie is right, the last GA i heard of that was ex'd was George P. Lee. I THINK it was because of apostasy and immorality.

Paul H. Dunn was never ex'd, to my knowledge.

You already have one very good answer here - so remember please that Elder Paul H. Dunn was absolutely in good standing and was on emeritus status until his death. I have no idea whatsoever how you came up with his name at all. The only thing that would even possibly cast a shadow on Elder Dunn's reputation was that his memory slipped a few times on some stories he told, as far as origins.

The last General Authority was a Seventy, George P. Lee, who was ex-communicated in 1989. He was of Navajo extraction and served faithfully up to 1989. Last I heard he was living in southern Utah somewhere. I think he had started the repentance process as of 1994 for at least 2 offenses which I won't mention here - because the process of repentance is a personal one - but he has not returned to the Church. He was born in 1943, which coincidentally was the next to the last time a General Authority was ex-communicated, namely Richard Lyman.

He was not exed. He is an emeritus status .... essentially a retired General Authority. The funny thing about this question is that I don't think of it as "omigosh, how embarassing for us..." It shows us that mankind is fallible, no matter how popular, no matter how important, no matter how "high up" a person gets...mankind can still fall. It is a very important lesson for the "little people" like me (no, I'm not vertically challenged) to stay close to the Holy Ghost and to carefully make good decisions.

I think it's kind of cruel to laugh at someone for their inadequacies or failings. That's just really unChristian...and if you're an atheist, whatever...it's rude/mean/rotten.

And excommunicating a person is not cruel. Mormons believe in covenants. Covenants are sacred and we believe that God takes them very seriously. If a person is not able or willing to live a covenant into which he has entered, then it is better to remove that covenant so that he is not accountable. Granted, it is not something a person strives for. There is a lot of shame, grief and heartache with an excommunication. It is difficult to return to full fellowship. Possible, but difficult.

The Church prefers to leave excommunication as a very last resort any more. It is very serious, so if they don't have to do this, they prefer not to.

What an incredible answer Fotomama...bravo.

Being "ex-ed" isn't public knowledge...unless that person wants it to be. They don't stand up in church and say "So and so has been excommunicated"

Also, although it is very serious and unfortunate if a person is excommunicated, that person can ALWAYS repent and come back into the church. It will be a long and humbling process I am sure, but it is not a "cast-away" thing were the person can never come back. i am sure every effort is made to reactivate the person(s) into the gospel.

Personally I don't think it is my business. Being excommunicated is a serious matter. It's not really gossip subject! Only Jesus was perfect no man no matter what can be perfect.

any religion that excommunicates is a religion of hate and pejudice.
