Does it say it anywhere on the telly or has it special fittings or something.

Sorry, I should have explained. I got a present of a tv from someone who's bought a plasma thing. This is a huge tv, wide screen and silver - very modern looking. How rude would I be if I asked this person if the tv they donated to me is high definition? I wouldn't dream of it! So I was wondering if there is another way to find out. If not, it doesn't matter cos its still a lot better than the one I had.

Rachel, I think the BEST way to know is to look at the sticker on the back of the TV and get the model number....then use Google with the MODEL number....you'll get a lot of information that is CORRECT that way....

Since your not in the US, I can't tell you to look at the FRONT of the cabinet and tell you to look for HDTV or HD on it, and I can't tell you to look at the INPUT connectors and see if you have a couple inputs with 5 holes.....

You have SCART cabling.....and if you have it, then I would guess there will be a HD stamped on the back by it.....or Digital, or Hi Def........

There would be "special fittings" but they would all be inside and you couldn't see them. Usually, you need to pay for cable service and receiver that provides HD programming or have a little indoor antennae that picks up the HD channels over the air. With my HDTV, when I turn on a HD channel in the upper right hand corner of the screen it says HD, Stereo, 1080. Look on the back for a "plate" that shows the serial number and model and HD should appear somewhere on the TV's ID information. This might be like the chicken and the egg, if the TV isn't labeled HD you don't know if you should sign up for HD service or buy an over- the-air antennae.

OK, if they have bought a 'plasma thing', my guess is the T.V. they have given you is a C.R.T. (cathode ray tube) type.

Is it very deep, more than 6 inches, front to back? If 'Yes', then it's a C.R.T. and is definitely NOT an H.D. T.V. - there are no C.R.T. televisions with H.D. capability.

If 'No', then it may be an L.C.D. television - but the chances of someone giving away a nearly new H.D. ready T.V., even to a friend, are very remote.

It would be easy to tell you if you listed the model of the Plasma TV, but most TV will state HD ready or HDTV.

It would say it,kinda like the computer has all the outside stickers...also you could look up the model number on the net like at Sony or Magnavox.com or whatever brand your tv is and it will give the features....

you will only see a high definition with a sky high definition set top-box dvd picture is clear but don't waist money on a hd lead. ps if the tv was free then don't worry about it.

What are you really saying?

Do you want the tv or not?

If not, I will send you my address, as it is my mums birthday next week and I will pay the cab fare to pick it up.
