My 3-year-old decided to get into the food coloring and dye our golden retriever green. It only lasted about 1-2 days and then wore off. I didn't even have to bath him =)
Good Luck!

Ignore all the rude responses- there is absolutely nothing wrong with dyeing your pets. I've dyed cats and dogs (I'm a groomer) and it's not harmful or upsetting to them in the least.
You can use either Kool-Aid or food coloring. The Wilton food coloring paste that comes in little jars works very well. However, I would not suggest just wiping it on and leaving it- it would be better if you could saturate the cat and rinse it off again. While it's not toxic, it could dry out or irritate her skin if left on permanently.

Please don't do that just to give the kids a "ha ha." There are so many other ways to give joy to kids on April Fools Day. Why not ust dress up the cat in something funny if you must involve the cat at all. But don't dye the cat... that's bad, real bad. Plus it might give your kids and their freinds ideas about doing things that may be really harmful to their own pets or other people's animals. Please don't do it.

Kool Aid would be the best way to go!! Being that it has no chemicals, it will be easy to wash in and out, and won't irritate kitty! Unless you want to get it done professionally, that will cost. But if you want quick results, some hair care store or costume shops carry a mouse-type hair dye that you apply straight from the can, and that the chemicals are not too harsh.
Happy Pranking!

Funny idea, except for the part where the cat has to experience unnecessary stress for the sake of amusing you and your family. Don't dye the poor kitty...

hmmmmm to dye a cat you would have to get it wet......
cats HATE to be wet.....
hope you are counting on the scratches you are going to get doing this. Personally I am with those that wouldnt blame the cat one bit.... in fact I might cheer him on!
go with the suggestion of getting another cat the same size, safer and less cruel.

If you want to look cruel and stupid that would be the best thing to do. Why don't you make the whole family funny hats, including the cat or dog?

Kool Aid works for dying yarn, and you have to soak it for hours, so negative on the kool aid.
I'm sorry but I don't really know how to dye a cat.
I'm very eager to find out how!!!

I know it may look like fun-but please do not dye your cat. It is a live being and deserves to live its live without such non sense. It is also important to teach your children to respect and love animals-they are not toys! Thank you for making a right decision.

Cats are not Easter eggs, leave the poor creature out of your pranks. Otherwise, you are teaching your children that the cat is a toy. Do not think that this is a harmless, victimless prank. It will shape your children's attitudes toward pets/animals for life.
