They will check you out (good) but also give you drugs (don't take them). See site below so you will not have permanent problems. In mean time get something that has wet heat to put around your neck while lying down. Drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest.

What happened to you is called 'whipping' in some countries...basically, the braking threw your neck right into the back of the chair, that can hurt a lot. Go to the hospital, they will probably just give you some mild pain medicine and a very useful thing to support your neck. Pain will be gone in a few days.

If it was only "almost rear ending" chances are that you did not brake any bones. Your pain therefore is what is called in therapy: referred pain, which means pain that has its roots in a different location than you are feeling it. That is common when a body is jousted, like yours must have been, by the sudden stop (very much like being thrown out of a horse in jousting!)
The solution for that is mio-fascial release massage. It goes deep into the several levels of muscle and help them to be released from their cramped state (they close like an oyster for self protection, now they have to be convinced to relax again by manipulation).
Make sure you go to a real licensed therapist, there are too many fakes out there who don't know how to do it properly. You may be able to find one in a chiropractor's office.
Good luck with your recovery.

Yes head to the ER (or your doctor) as soon as you can - (tomorrow) they will check you out to be sure you are fine.
I had a hair line neck injury 3 years ago - we were rear ended.
I had to head to physical therapy for a few weeks and take a muscle relaxer -
Use ice - not heat for your neck. Get a large ice pack and stick it in a pillow case, motrin and just lay down.
Ice your neck up to four times a day (20 mins).
See your MD (ER)...

YES, you may have a hyperextension injury, probably need an MRI and good exam, otherwise you could get worse and suffer neuro problems down the road.
Most likely just a strain, but is it worth taking the risk?

if you have just pain go see your doctor, don't waste the time of the er docs and nurses with a minor pain...if you were having numbness, tingling anything like that then sure an er trip is worth it...and why would you be in pain if you almost hit a car, dont follow so close next time

If it's really bad then you should check it out. If you can stick it out, wait a few days to see if it gets better. If it doesn't then definitely get it checked out.
