Spread butter or margerine on two slices of white bread, and make a sandwich with two slices of American cheese. Butter on the outside. I like a little bit of mayo on the inside, and sometimes Claussen dill pickles. (Yeah, the pickles sound weird, but don't knock it til you try it. Some kids I babysat got me hooked on it.)
Then, just cook over a medium flame, watching to make sure it doesn't burn. About the only way you can make a bad grilled cheese is by burning it.
Really good dipped into tomato soup, but that's usually a winter thing. There are a lot of variations, like putting a couple slices of ham or turkey inside, or using specialty breads or cheeses, but for some reason the cheap junk always tastes best.

My grandma made the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever had. She started out by melting the butter (real butter) in the the skillet, medium heat works best... then speading it around till it covers the entire skillet. Now place your bread in the pan and swipe it around with the spatula. Wait till the bread starts to toast, then start melting more butter in the skillet. Flip the bread over onto the melted butter and put slices of cheese on the toasted side of the bread. (you can use american cheese slices here or velveta, but if you use velveta don't leave the slices too thick) After it is toasted and/or the cheese begins to melt assemble, cut corner to corner, and enjoy.
They were the best double toasted doubled cheese sandwiches I've ever had...

butter one side of 2 pieces of bread. i like whole grain bread that's got a lot of flavor and texture. heat the pan on med-low. put one piece in the pan, butter side down, and put 2 slices american cheese or other favorite on. i also love gouda, brie, meunster or a mix. cover with the other piece of bread, butter side up. After a few minutes, flip so the other buttered piece will brown and cheese finishes melting. use a nice med-low heat to slowly crisp the bread and melt the cheese. salt and pepper at the end. Perfect as it but add sliced red onion or tomato or bacon if you want. serve with tomato soup or canned corn or fresh broccoli or salad. yum!

I've never made them by putting the butter in the pan first. I've always buttered the bread itself. Interesting idea though! I like them with Velveeta because the cheese just drips out. Unless you're mopping up dripped cheese on your plate, with the crust....you didn't use enough cheese. I also like to put pickles on it sometimes, prior to grilling it....and I love dipping into tomato soup.
Pepperjack on Rye is great too, and I like using shredded cheddar sometimes. Gees...looks like I'll eat a grilled cheese any way it comes at me!
Man, I'm getting hungry!

I lightly butter both sides of each piece of bread. I like Sour Dough bread the best. I put them in a skillet on about Medium to Medium-high and let one side brown (just pick up a corner to check on it). After I flip them over I put on a slice of American on one side and I like to put some shredded cheddar on the other piece. After they've started to brown a little I put the two together and after 30 sec or so flip it over again, wait just a bit and..... Done!

I like cheap white bread and Kraft singles. But the key is to spray the outside with a garlic butter spray. Then fry until brownish and crisp on both sides. I love making them this way.
