Have had a clogged up left ear and loss of hearing due to wax for nearly a week now. Went to the doctor today and she tried to get the excess wax out with some kind of long thin metal instrument. She did it first in my right ear (which I didnt have a problem with because I can hear out of) and boy did it hurt!! In fact I screamed as I wasnt expecting it to hurt. she then decided to use the irrigation method instead in both ears which didnt remove anything! she said that the wax was stuck on the actual ear drum and that I should go use debrox ear drops for a couple of weeks which will help my ear absorb the wax.
So now I still cant hear anything out of my left ear and my right ear now has a dull pain. What did she do!!??
Ive had my ears syringed before without any problems and it worked but I just got the feeeling that she wasnt doing it properly.
Also does anyone reccommend using the hydrogen peroxide method? Thanks all.

One of the reasons that the doctor irrigated your ear after attempting to remove it with tools is that irrigation softens the wax. What has happened to you is that the wax has melted against your eardrum and it can cause some discomfort and up to a 25dB hearing loss in that ear. What we do in my clinic in this case would be send the patient home with a wax softener such as Debrox or Audiologists Choice, but not for two weeks. Usually after you use this product for a couple of days it will soften the wax to the point that it can flushed out simply in the shower. If it doesn't get better after a couple of days of consistently using your wax softener, then you should make another appt. to have the wax removed with tools, suction, or irrigation. I would not use hydrogen peroxide. Use the wax softener that you were given. Your ear canal is full of thousands of nerve endings, and it can cause discomfort to have them cleaned. It is very commom in someone who has a complete wax plug for the softened cerumen (wax) to melt down on the eardrum. Sorry that you have to go through this, but it will eventually get better.

i have only had my ears irrigated,, and it didnt hurt! have no idea what she was using an instrument for,,,,,,, i suggest you see another doctor, even go to the emergency room, since its a weekend,,,,,,, you dont want to take a chance, especially if the pain continues

for ear wax, which i have problems with sometimes, i use the over the counter wax removal,,,,, it works fine

use the ear drops and go back to her in a month or when the drops are done=she should be able to get wax out then as it wil have softened=you cant hear as the wax is still there and it will hurt til you get it softened
