Psalms 134:1 A Song of Ascents. Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD! 2 Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the LORD! 3 May the LORD bless you from Zion, he who made heaven and earth!
1 Kings 8:22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven, 23 and said, "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 24 who have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him. You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day.
Psalms 63:3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. 4 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.

"Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees" probably in Hebrews chapter 12
Moses prayed with his hands raised.
Jesus broke bread over his Head.
Trees do it constantly.
It's a common practice among spirit- led Cristians but you won't find it much in those bump-on -a-log ,cold,"main-stream" churches. That's probably why you don't find God much there either!
If your friends find fault with the way you worship or praise God, maybe you need to cultivate some new friends. Personally, I think part of the problem may be that you need more time of personal study, reading the Bible yourself. Then you'll have more answers for them, and you'll be much happier, and closer to Jesus. If He's your boyfriend and Husband and Lover, don't you want to spend more time with Him??? We're supposed to be the "Bride of Christ". Then they'll really laugh at you. but He won't! --Sionarra

There is not a good Bible reason for doing it, it really is not in the Bible at all. It is really a recent practice, I never saw it or heard of it until I was about 30 years old. It still is a practice that is really only done by charismatic and Pentecostal churches and their offshoots. Most baptist churches, at least in the area where I live, you would never see it done or rarely at best.

It's a sign of being open to God in worship.
Its a sign that we adore Him, and are embracing Him.
