OK, a friend gave me a dish network dvr reciever. I don't have cable or sat. Can I use it to record over the air shows?

No the video replication storage area is tightly hidden in the micro processor and the storage is still encrypted. I was however able to make the receiver think it was decoding a signal from the LNB but I doubt that most consumers have the equipment and know how necessary to remodulate a terestial broadcasts and encode into a digital satellite signal. I have not been able to do this with HDTV yet, but am trying!

Check if it has an RF input for an off-the-air antenna (used by Dish to allow viewing and recording local channels).

Assuming the Dish even allows you to go to the local channels without an activation, then it should work.
