Is it a sin to get a tattoo or a piercing?

my friend said that anything yo do to your body is telling God that you don't like waht he gave you. Is this true? Cause I want to get alot of peircings and maybe a tattoo

You're friend is creating his own doctrine. There is an Old Testament prohibition against getting tattoos but that was in the context of the Israelites not being like the pagans around them who would mark their bodies as part of their pagan worship.

But here is what a New Testament Christian should consider if they want to get a tattoo. Am I doing this to glorify God? For instance, some people get a tattoo of Jehovah in Hebrew lettering that they use as a witnessing tool. When people ask them about their tatto they can start talking about God. But if a person just got a tattoo so that they could "look cool" and impress people then they might want to pray about that situation. Tattoos are for life and many Christians wish they had not gotten tattoes before they became a Christian. Now when someone asks them about it they have to talk about how Jesus has changed their lives from when they were reckless sinners in the past.

The Old Testament law commanded the Israelites, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:28). So, even though believers today are not under the Old Testament law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:23-25; Ephesians 2:15), the fact that there was a command against tattoos should cause us to question. The New Testament does not say anything about whether a believer should or should not get a tattoo.



In relation to tattoos and body piercings, a good test is to determine whether we can honestly, in good conscience, ask God to bless and use the particular activity for His own good purposes. "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). The Bible does not command against tattoos or body piercings, but it also does not give us any reason to believe God would have us get tattoos or body piercings.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20: "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

According to what I hear from many Christians who speak on it, yes it is. So in other words, God wouldn't let us customize our bodies even a little bit? Is surgery, even to save a life, (or in my case, remove something harmful from my body) a sin as well? Yet another reason why I don't see myself following this God or rather what the Bible says.

In the Bible, God tells us that our bodies are His temple and we have to keep them pure. Do you think getting a tattoo is keeping yourself pure? Are a lot of piercings on your body going to glorify God?
