I've had dogs before, one male who was fine. We recently got a new puppy after the death of our 12 yr old mutt. He's a small dog (shih tzu mix) and I'm wondering if thats the reason. He pushes his leg forward when he urinates, but doesn't lift it.

Is something wrong, or is it just his small size?

If he's a puppy, it may not be until he is 18 mos. that he starts lifting his leg. Some dogs just don't bother if there is no other dogs scent around or females that they have to impress. Others urinate in the way you describe so that they can cover the scent of something on the ground.
Remember urine allows the dog an easy way to announce his presence, his size, his territory. Young or submissive dogs often don't want to draw undue attention to their presence.

Nope...sounds fine to me. I have seen many grown male dogs that never lifted their leg to pee. the Shih tzu is a small dog and still very young so give it time.. It may not feel the need to hike it's little leg very far to get the job done.

I have a 5 yr old yellow lab that doesn't lift his leg all the time. For the first three years of his life he never lifted his leg. He was the only male with 6 other females so we thought that was the problem. Maybe he needs another male to show him. Learn from example. Good Luck! I don't think you have anything to worry about though.

I have a puppy also and he does not lift his leg either. He squats like a girl. Then again, one of my mother's female dogs has been known to lift her leg on occasion when urinating. There is nothing wrong with this.

Lifting the leg is a learned behavior. My male dogs grew up with female dogs around an so they never had a model to learn that behavior from. Sounds like your male dog doesn't have a role model either...

Nah, not all males feel the need to lift their leg... They basically lift their leg so that they can pee higher than the last male that was there. Some dogs have no real interest in dominance and those silly games and will continue to pee like young males do.

HOw old is he? When they are young they tend to do that at first. Then they slowly learn to lift their leg. I have a chihuahua that just recently started lifting his leg and he is a little over a year. On the other hand I had a Shar-pei that was 7 years old and never did learn to lift his leg......

It may be just his small size. As long as he moves his leg to not urinate on it, this is perfectly normal. I had a male Daschund who almost always lifted his leg when he went to the washroom, despite his very short legs but as he got older it worked just fine sliding it forward.

That is completely normal. He is just getting his foot out of the way. Not every male dog lifts their leg. Many squat like females. I know of one Italian Greyhound who actually hoists himself up on his front feet alone and walks away from where he has peed, then puts his hind feet back down.
