plate. Is it called a STARTER plate. I feel like it is called something different but similar. Like in a fancy restaurant. The plate that is before you that looks like a dinner plate but is removed before the entree was served.
THANK YOU!

It is called the "charger" plate and is used for decoration. Silly isn't it? Still it adds a certain elegance to the table decor.

It is in fact called a Charger, but in same cases it DOES serve a purpose.

Chargers are supposed to be used to keep your plate with food either cold or hot. Ideally the charger should be placed in front of you just before service of your meal. The charger is usually pre-heated or chilled. Thus, it "charges" your plate by re-heating/chilling it when it is placed on your table.

However, there are some restaurants that simply place them on the table for decoration.

Hope that helps. :o)

You were close - it's called a Charger plate - and it's only used for accent/decoration

If it's purely decorative, then it's a charger plate.
