Ignore Helena above and listen to the Shelby guy - PUGS are without a doubt one of the most gentle, most kind breeds. These dogs are focused on only one thing: YOU and YOUR FAMILY. My wife and I have a pug and frequently go to meet-ups with other pug owners and we all agree that there are several key advantages of pugs over other breeds:
A) They are not naturally aggressive, more so if trained right at an early age,
B) They are extremely smart - not only do they learn commands quickly, but they can figure things out. One time my pug kept barking to get my attention because she wanted to go to the bathroom. I ignored her so she went over, and grabbed the leash with her mouth and brought it over and dropped it on my lap. What a smart dog!
C) They have empathy - my mother-in-law was ill one day and our pug slept right next to her and would give my mother-in-law a look of, yes, i understand you're not feeling well. I have a neighbor who had a child with Down's Syndrome, and our pug is really sensitive about this child. While with our neices and nephews she runs around and gets all excited, she is very quiet and calm around this child, allowing the child to pet her and hold her.
D) They are lapdogs - When you watch tv, this dog is either sleeping right next to you or right on your lap.
E) Very good with children - See my comments in C. Our nieces and nephews have a great time with our pug and she doesnt mind having them dress her up or take her for walks to throwing a ball to her.
Get a pug!!!!!

I heard that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are the excellent smallish dogs round little ones. they are not tremendous small, yet they're on the smaller area. I truthfully have owned an 8 pound yorkie and a 5 pound toy poodle and neither of those became good with little ones.

It doesn't really work like that. Every breed of dog isn't the same. Individual dogs have individual personalities. If you pick a good breeder who raises the dogs calmly and friendly, and then once you acquire the dog raise it to be calm and friendly, that's how it will be. Dogs are like children. When you have a baby, it won't just grow up to be a good kid because of its heritage or something.

Small dogs are pretty much all mean. They're nippy, nasty little brutes. I can't believe I'm saying this cause I'm a total doggy lover! One time, a west highland terrier bit into my leg (a year or two ago) and I still have a dent on my left leg! I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm just stating my opinion. Little dogs do that cause they're insecure and because they're tiny, they need to protect themselves. However, most tiny dogs go overboard. Now, I CAN give you a list of what tiny dogs are NOT good with kids and make HORRIBLE household pets. (All of these can be proved by experience!)
Chihuahua
west Highland Terrier
Shih Tzu
Miniature Poodle
Pug
Well, that's most of them. OH, and there IS one dog that's good with kids, but it's famous for it's horrible back and hip problems because of its length. In its old age, you'll need to carry it up and down stairs, but otherwise, it's TOTALLY angelic! You probably know it as a mini wiener dog, but it's technically called a miniature daschund (even in their regular size, they're still pretty small!)
Daschund F.Y.I =I'm not sure how to spell it, so sorry!
I hope this helps you in choosing the right dog for you and your kids!

I have never owned a chihuaua myself. (I don't even know how to spell it) but 2 of my friends have them and they have the ego of a doberman. Little dog, big attitude. My advice is a pug or a jack russell terrier(frasier dog). They love humans, pocket sized and good with kids. Good luck!

Pugs are good dogs. They are small and friendly and, for the most part, are true couch potato dogs. They are very happy to just be next to you on the couch keeping you company.
