So the neighbors daughter is about to ship for Recruit Training, the one question she forgets to ask her recruiter is.. What's the protocol for saying Aye Ma'am, Yes Ma'am? What if half the platoon says Yes Ma'am and the other half says Aye Ma'am? How will she know the difference? thanks!

There is a difference between the two. "Aye Aye" Ma'am/Sir is what you say when you've been given an order. The response indicates that you understand and will comply. "Yes" Ma'am/Sir is what you say when you've been asked a question and you answer in the positive. Examples: 1) Private XXX, square away that rack (bed)! Aye Aye, Ma'am. 2) Private XXX, Did you square away that rack? Yes Ma'am. The two are often interchanged, but that is not correct. Aye Aye when given an order, Yes when answering a question. Simple stuff and only applies in the maritime services - Navy, Marines, Coast Guard. Army and Air Force don't use Aye Aye.

As I have understood it from military family members - "Aye Aye Ma'am" is nautical - more the Navy & Marines - and it means "I understand & I will comply."
"Yes Ma'am" is basically the same thing....and would be used any time she was addressed by a female superior officer. Guess it depends on which branch - but I bet basic training will make it all crystal clear. :)

It's not proper to say Aye Ma'am, if anything it's proper to say Aye Aye Ma'am, but it sounds kind of stupid, so Yes Ma'am gets my vote. On the other hand, it is proper and sounds just fine to say Aye Aye Sir !

Believe me, they will tell the recruits what to say. She doesn't need to ask the recruiter. And the platoon won't say answer the DI's with two different greetings...if they do...the ones who said the wrong thing will pay for it!

Basic training will make it very clear what she is to say and how to address officers.
