do they choose where they will go and r they sent to places within the area they went to medical school

What happens is that 4th year med -students spend a couple of months interviewing at the various hospitals that meet their future specialty criteria.This interview process can take several months and cover many miles and many cities
At the end of the process the programs rank the candidates they interviewed and the candidates rank the programs they interviewed at .If everything works right the candidate that ranked number one on a program's list will also have that program as number one on their list-a match.
Where it gets really crazy is if someone doesn't match and then people start scrambling for positions .

No. As I understand it, they previously gave their preferences, as did the medical schools. On match day they find out where they will be going, and it is not necessarily in the area near their medical schools.
