I know some of you will say you did; thank you for your service. This question is directed at the many who support the Iraq war yet refuse to join up. Assuming you could join, why haven't you?

You are not going to get many responses you like because most of us have already served or for some reason cannot serve.

What is your excuse?

I'm 40 now. I did a hitch in the Navy, so I have served my country. If they recall me I'll happily go again.

Some people say that the pay sucks, and that may be true for some. Although from my point of view it really didn't. I was paid $323 every two weeks (I served in the late 80's). Bills??? Rent....Free. Medical.....Free, Dental....Free, Food.... Three meals daily Free, Travel.....Free (or a $10 flight on a military aircraft). That $323 (or $646 a month) was just pocket money.

You wouldn't join the military because it shouldn't be a spur of the moment thing. Becoming a soldier isn't like any other job. you can't just quit if you decide you don't like the job. you have to look at the risks. there is a serious risk of dying or being seriously injured over there, not to mention the psychological havoc being in the was has the potential to wreak. also, the job does not necessarily pay well. it may seem good an patriotic and heroic, but aren't there just as patriotic things you could do at home? to me it seems illogical to join the military simply because you CAN.

This is the type of question that makes our country so great. Its space in which to have conversation- not heated or distant, but conversation nonetheless.
I'm an Army vet, my bf is an Air Force vet, my daughter is in the Army Reserves, and my son is in the National Guard. All 4 of us volunteered, served our time honorably and now, 3 of us live ordinary and boring civilian lives. My son is going to Iraq later this year.
Serving your country is a calling and is not something to be taken lightly. Ya, sure, our country has a lot of problems, but so does everyone else. I don't think everyone who hasn't served but who could is hiding their head in the sand. After all, we ALL pay the taxes for Bush's campaign. Without money, where would we be?
So, for those of us who served, well, in my opinion, we have the guts to do what's necessary. I can honestly say there are a lot of people who are not capable of doing what we have done. They just don't have the nerve. That's not their fault. You have to understand that without us old fighters there wouldn't be a choice as to "run away" or not, because all the cowards would be dead. They live because we military vets allow them to live. Those people are just pets.

I do support thw ar but not yet 18, about another half year. I do plan on enlisting however, Iraq or not.
To do so I may have to lie a little bit during registration but it shouldn't make a difference.

I am waiting so I can become an officer. Also I believe people do not have to join a war they support. They can support it many different ways.

I'm 32 and just returned to school. I am trying to finish my degree in global affairs with the desired intention of one day working for the State Department, and thus doing my part in serving this country.

Yes, yes, no. However, while I do not support the war, I do support my country. My primary reason for not joining is the fact that my interests and career plans do not mesh well with military training--an artist has no business in any of the armed forces--the military doesn't exactly encourage creativity (unless it involves the taking or saving of lives).
