I keep hearing how a given nation is an XYZ religion nation, but a nation is a quantity, it doesn't have a pulse.

True, what is intended by such a statement is a demographic analysis.
However, less scrupulous individuals often attempt to shoe-horn mere demographics into official legal code for everyone, even those outside the demographics. Therein lies the need for the distinction.

In the case of the Hebrew nation, the descendants of Abraham, it is pretty clear that they had a national/official religion. True, it is up to individual adherents to follow/not follow. There is an additional thing at work here, though, or at least there seems to be: not only did God deal with individuals in the scripture, He also dealt with them as a nation. Things get a bit sticky here, and I confess that I don't have a firm grasp on it. The idea I think, has something to do with federal headship (ie Adam being the federal head of the human race, then Christ becoming the new federal head). The sins of the many fall on the one.
Hope this helps and that I provided an answer as factually and politely as possible. (see your recent post...)

Absolutely! The number 6 is a member of the cult of 12 because 12 is twice as big! It's hard to know what exactly 6 believes about 12 but the respect is immense.

According to the Bible, 6 is the number of man, so if you added 666 and 777 and then divide by 333, you get absolutely nothing but more numbers :)
I think the media is trying to tell you that the majority of people in that nation are that religion.

What a great way to put it. Personal faith is a personal decision between God and man. Politics is just that and faith is just that.
(according to the Bible, book of Revelation, 6 is the number of man.)
