Hi all, I am considering buying an SUV, and I really fell in love with the new looks of Ford Explorer (starting from 2006).
:
-Considering the poor resale value, would it really be a big loss if I keep the car for 3-4 years? The car retails here for around $29000 with fabric seats(ie. basic model), with 60k kilometers (around 38k miles) service and maintenance. Considering alternatives, I see the Toyota Prado VX with better resale value, but it starts (basic) at around $34000 (no free service) for the 6 cylinder 4 litre. 4 cylinder prado is cheaper, little more than explorer, but i would not want to take it (GX). Besides I really liked the interior of explorer. Am i right about the interior? I also think that for resale, if I lose 25% in a year on Explorer and say 18% on prado, the $ amount is not a big difference?? please comment..
-Since I drive long distances, how does its fuel efficiency compare to Mitubishi Pajero 2005(Montero 2005),nissan pathfinder and prado 6 cylinder

I'm not a big fan of the Explorer, but the new ones do look pretty nice. As for resale value, no matter what vehicle you buy, as soon as it leaves the lot the resale value drops at least $5,000. As for service and maintenance, there's really no point in getting it, I made that mistake on my 06 Chevy Cobalt, which ran the total price paid on the vehicle up a few thousand dollars, so that "free service" isn't free, you get charged for it when you buy the car. I've never seen a Pajero, so I couldn't comment on one of those, but the nissan pathfinders seem to have issues at about 89,000 miles as many I run across have blown headgaskets at around that mile mark. So I would stick with the Explorer. As far as fuel economy it all depends on how you drive, and don't buy the V8.

Well you know I am asked this question on an yearly basis. We tell fleet buyers what vehicle will give them the lowest operation cost per mile. This includes all factor from Insurance costs, purchase price, maintenance, tires, gas mileage all come into play. Right now the bast bang for the buck will be the Ford. It has been for a few years. The Mitubishi, the nissan and toyota, although nice vehicles all are very expensive to insure and mainatin. They are fine if nothing breaks. When they do their have been parts availability issues expecially on the Mitsu. I have had all three makes you mention tied up excessevely for parts delays especially if they are involved in a collision. The other large issue is in many areas of the country the Foreign ones cost more to insure. Sometimes excessivly more. This is partley due to the high cost of collision parts, they have extensive damage on low speed collisions and a higher theft rate. Have you looked at the Dodge Durango? This vehicle is also very cost effective to run and has decent resale. I don't know where you live but unless your on the west coast of the US the foreign vehicles, because of higher prices, don't necessarly sell any better used. Many people, when buying used, only look at price. Middle america, where the Big 3 Us companies employ most of it's work force is very pro american as well. There are many times when we ship Fords to the midwest to be sold at auction because what we can sell them for more then makes up for the shipping cost from La.

They are great for the most part, but the gas mileage isn't. The 4 litre Cologne engine wasn't known for its great economy and that's why Ford spent millions to develop the 3.8 liter for its full sized cars in the United States. Expect about 17 miles to the gallon or about 24km for 4 litres. Highway mileage will be better with a V-6 than a 4 though. I'd get the Explorer.

you should wait for the 2008 explorers to come out because they will have an all new high tech device called "ford sync". it's a voice command system that you can play mp3 players and talk on the cell phone and more. o yeah the explorer is the best selling suv in america.

A new Explorer is your best bet. If you're concerned about resale, get a certified pre-owned Ford.
