If you make $500, do you have to claim that on your taxes, or is anything $501 and up that you have to file?

It's your TOTAL income for the year, not any one job, that determines whether you have to file. But if you had over $400 in self-employment income, you have to file.

No you do not have to file but if your income is at a low level, even if you do not have taxes withheld, it may be to your advantage to file because you may be eligible for the Earned Income Credit, where the government actually gives you an additional refund up to I believe 4,356 for 2006 because of your low income level.
