Whenever people tell you that eyesight cannot improve permanently, do not believe them. They need to try something first before they say it doesn't work, otherwise they're not being truly scientific. Real science means to try something first before determining whether you are sure of something. If you are taught that x implies y in school, and others tell you that x is y because science tells them so, that is NOT being scientific. How do they know for sure x is y unless they try it first? People (including doctors) are merely repeating to you what they've been taught to believe, rather than what they've tried. This is not true science.
Here is my recommendation, something that I have tried and know really works: the Bates method. It teaches you the correct vision habits used by people with perfect sight. It's meant to be used 24/7/365. It works much better than eye strengthening exercises that require something like 25 minutes a day and then you go back to your old bad eye habits. It can help you with your astigmatism. More info: http://www.iblindness.org
Many people who do eye strengthening exercises find that they have limited success, and later on say they should've gone with the Bates method instead. The Bates method is based on the findings of a doctor who also discovered adrenaline... this man was so smart that he was as high in the optometry world as one could be during his time. He discovered a way to reverse eyesight, but politics and economic forces compelled the board of optometrists at his school to expel him from his teaching position (he taught optometrists) and have him publicly ostracized.
Wait just a minute, why did the method work for me? Why would they work if he was "wrong"? Everything has worked for me exactly as Bates said they would; and I mean every single thing I've tried. He is not lying; the fraudulent ODs expelled him for economical reasons - there's even a 1978 UC-San Diego study that reveals the method eliminated astigmatism and strabismus (cross-eyes) in a few people. It's known as the McClay dissertion. For a brief synoposis of it, look at http://www.iblindness.org/evidence/
Here is the Bates method in a nutshell: http://www.i-see.org/bates_nutshell.html
Dr. Bates tested thousands of schoolchildren and found that he was able to improve their eyesight back to 20/20 or better.
He understood eyesight better than any eye doctor that has ever existed, believe it or not. He knew how to help people not strain when looking in the distance or up close, and understood the role the mind plays in vision.
I was able to go from 20/100 to 20/13 (verified on Snellen eye chart) in 2 months. You can find out more about the method at http://www.iblindness.org/ ... for a book with a lot of good information on how to improve your eyesight using the Bates method, you can purchase this one: http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/1556433417/ref=s9_asin_image_1-hf_favarpcbss_2238_g1/104-4012359-0946345?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1WC6CEVP6GZHBN3XSNZH&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=279667201&pf_rd_i=507846
Best of luck.

A question seen in this Optical section every day... Things that DO NOT help fix most focus problems in the eye Special exercises or "methods" or "palming" Foods Pills Herbs Things that protect vision over the long haul of your life Staying fit and active may protect the retina Wearing hat and quality sunglasses when in the sun Well balanced diet - with lots of fruit & veggies Regular eye exams Proven things to correct focus errors of the eye Prescription eyeglasses Contact lenses Lasik type surgery Implanted ocular lenses NOTE: if exercises worked for correcting refractive focus errors of the eye - we would all know people doing them - and fewer people would be wearing glasses.
