One can't argue Sarpedon's way of speaking out about the profession. The only disagreement would be the pay!

The southern states, however, generally pay less.

After being in military law enforcement for 20 years, I desired to continue my efforts in the civilian community.

Being an officer takes dedication and a true desire to want to help others who are less fortunate. From the elderly lady who has a flat tire on the road, to the abused family member who can't defend themselves from their abuser, an officer goes home after shift feeling very special inside knowing that he can say he did something to provide for a safer and better community!

Ok...ok...running down the road with the lights and sirens is cool too!

First of all, I don't believe you're doing a survey for a University project for several reasons. Your nickname, Serial K, misspelled university, and didn't capitalize in your typing. I would think, that at your level of education, you would at least know how to use spell check. How's that for being a Cop?. I'm not going to wave a flag at you, so here goes. Probably the main reason a person becomes an officer is because of the pay, benefits, being able to wear a uniform, and carry a gun, and of course, job security. Many people would like to do the same thing, but wouldn't be able to handle the stress, and be able to keep their sanity, and family together until they're able to retire. Helping people should be second nature to anyone who applies. Finding a lost child, saving someone's life, taking a criminal off the street, delivery a baby, these are all incredible events in a Police Officers life, and well worth it. You wouldn't believe how much it means when you hear the words Thank You, which by the way is not that often. How would anyone feel, if they had a job that would let them help anyone 24 hours a day. It felt pretty damn good.

It is very rewarding to help those in need and those that can't help themselves. I wanted to be a teacher first, but most of my friends had become officers. I started riding along and decided that this is what I wanted to do. The job is different every day you go to work. You see things that most people will never see, or didn't know existed because they have never been exposed to it. It is a demanding job, because you see so much hurt, sorrow, and degridation of society, then you have to go home and forget about work so that you can deal with your own problems in life. It is good to be able to get people off the street that need to be in jail, or to get someone help for their problems. I became a member of our departments SWAT team also, because I wanted more excitement that what the street officer gets on a daily basis. You get a huge amount of training that gives you loads of insight on human behavior and it really helps you in daily life and makes you more aware. There aren't many other jobs out there where your split-second decisions can affect someone so much. You are made a better person because you are held to such a high standard and are charged with making the right choices without hesitation. I think it makes me a better husband, father, and person.

I was a city officer and retired after 30 years. I served in the military in Viet Nam in 68-69. When I came home I got a B.S.E.E. and went to work as an electronics engineer. It didnt work out for me. Monday through Friday 8 to 5 bored me to death I missed the adreniline rush. That's an honest answer.

I'm retired and haven't thought about this in years. I think it was because my dad died when I was 11. My mom never re-married and I tended to get into a little trouble. Therefore, I met the Police on a few occasions. Eventually, I started hanging around the station. ( This town in under 15 thousand)Guess I must have seen them as father figures and eventually tested and got hired.Don't regret it a bit. I am still friends with some of the ones that ran across me in my youth and they are in their 70's.

I wanted to do two things. I wanted to help the community i lived in as well as repay my debt to the nation i live in. The country has been very good to me and countless others. And being a nation of laws my talents to keep those laws enforced far exceeded my skills to do other things. Also the pay is not bad and the benefits are great. Don't let other officers cry poor mouth.
