We have been sing PUR 2 stage water filters for several years and observing that the water filter indicator in recent months is moving much faster than it used to previously.

We started wondering if this water filter indicator really mean something or are we being victimized for a marketing stunt? I like to know how these indicators work and how they faithfully indicate filtering capacity. If we continue to use a filter that shows the 'end of life of filter', what is not being filered?

Any information or pointers on this are greately appreciated.

My guess: It has a small water-powered motor to move the arrow. There may be a gear, or shunt arrangement to move the arrow at the proper speed.

If you continue to use past "end-of life", and the filter is *full*, all the particles may slow down water flow. It might be possible that enough stuff could build up and support life (bacteria) if the water is not clorinated. If this happened it could slow down flow even more. If the filter material is fragile, it might eventually breech, allowing contaminants into the otherwise filtered water. If the filter has activated carbon to remove stuff, the carbon might become satuated and you might notice a change in taste.

Apparently, the "Automatic Safety Monitor" on the newer model (PUR 3) shuts off the water before this can happen .
