"SLR" refers to the light path through the lens to the film or sensor, whether it is a digital or "analog" (film-type) camera. Digital SLR's are usually differentiated from film SLR's by the additional of the letter "D" in front of the "SLR."
The cheapest DSLR that is worth owning is probably the Pentax K110D, and this is coming from a Nikon fan.
This is a decent camera.

You can also read this review of the K100D, which is the same camera as the K110D, except that it also has image stabilization in the camera: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/k100d.html
Check out this set-up. You can get the body, the "kit" lens for $395 after a rebate from B&H Photo in New York. (Rebate ends 4-30-07) You can find B&H by going to Yahoo! Shopping, as they are one of the retailers that Yahoo! links to.
"Pentax K110D, 6.1 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera Kit with Pentax Zoom Super Wide Angle SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Autofocus Lens." You will still need a memory card, which you can buy for about $30-45, depending on the size you choose.

An older model can go for about $400-500. A new one just $200 more. Chose wisely as you will spend more money in lenses, and once you start down that path, you don't want to lose the investment. Try to stay with Canon or Nikon to be safe (maybe Sony, Olympus or Pentax).
www.dpreview.com is a great site for this type of comparison shopping to get the price and features you want.
By the way, be VERY careful about cheap cameras on the web. There are vendors out there that will really rip you off esp on the SLR's. Make sure you will be getting the complete package. BHPHOTOVIDEO, COSTCO and AMAZON have been very good.

SLRs are both digital and film. Film are cheaper than digital, about $200 for a decent body, compared to a $1300 for about the same quality body for a digtial. A basic SLR can be as low as $500 (Nikon D40) to $700 (Canon Rebel XTi). Of course there are more advance SLRs but those are just the basic cameras.

SLR stands for 'single lens reflex'...a type of camera. They are available in both film and digital versions. The film cameras are quite a bit cheaper than digital...but then you will have the cost of film and processing over the years.
