Tie as much of your hair up as you can and ensure it won't come lose, any bits you leave out should be smooth and intentionally coiffed. The 40's look was very deliberate, not the morning-after style that we can get away with these days.

If you do a really sleek updo, I think it would be fantastic. Another thing you can do is search for 40's style hairdos and bring a picture to your stylist so she can recreate it for you.
