A person who is bipolar experiences severe mood swings. They may be severely depressed--can't get out of bed depressed, for weeks at a time, and then they start feeling extraordinarily happy and exhilarated to the point that they become reckless, especially in matters involving spending, relationships and personal safety.
Some bipolar people even become manic and experience hallucinations, delusions and paranoia. They usually have to be hospitalized for a month or so while the mania is treated with antipsychotic medications. Oftentimes these patients are misdiagnosed for years before a definitive diagnosis is made.
If you have to ask, you probably aren't.
I recommend that you do some reading. Search bipolar disorder and read some of the stuff that comes up. Whether you are or not, it's good to know something about this disease and how to deal with it. Hope you're not!

You know by going to a professional and getting diagnosed. Only a psychiatrist can accurately diagnose whether or not you are bi-polar. There are many factors that go into being bi-polar, and there are many things that are similar to, but different than bi-polar. It is a fairly serious disease, and should not be reduced to a simple diagnosis without a professional on hand. In other words, there IS no way YOU can test to see if you are bi-polar. It just isn't that simple.
That said, it is generally characterized, in part, by extreme highs and extreme lows in your moods which shift quickly because of chemical imbalances in your brain. It is a disease... but it is a disease that you can easily live with if you get professional help. It is treatable with medication, therapy, and changes to your life strategy. If you suspect you are bi-polar, or have any other serious problems with depression or extreme mood swings, talk to your doctor about it. At least you'll know for sure if this is what you have, or if it is something else, or even nothing at all.
Good luck!

If you have sudden mood swings for no reason at all, then you should go to a doctor and get yourself tested. It's a defficiency of some chemical in your body and so the doctor'll be able to tell after tests.

Well..i'm not sure of a way you could determine it for yourself, you'd have to be diagnosed by a psychiatrist..
but the symptoms consist of alternating periods of
1)depression, sadness, lack of motivation, etc.
2)periods of mania where you feel overly happy and excited, maybe even anxious like you drank a ton of caffiene
These moods alternate every few weeks, and happen for no apparent reason

Bipolar is typically a state of mind, not a disorder. Most people think that its some birth defect... Please... Very rarely is this the case. Although the rate of mental retardation is increasing (at least in america), it still is a way of thinking... So to answer the question... Basically you go to a certified personnel to handle the situation, and then they give you pills if you are! HOW AWESOME HUH? SCAMS THIS AND SCAMS THAT PILLS FIX EVERYTHING !!!

You'd probably have to hear it from a doctor, you can't make the diagnosis yourself.
