If you want a compact- then Space Cowboy made an excellent suggestion. The fuji 6Mp resolves better than most 7 and 8Mp cameras. And- with 2-3 stops better high ISO performance you get 4 to 8 times higher shutter speed for capturing that action.

But- it doesn't have much of a zoom. You could look at the Fuji S6000fd if you want a zoom on Fuji's incredible ccd.

Go to a GOOD camera store, and ask to see the Canon cameras that have 8 mega-pixels ... it take's ONLY 'color pictures' but you can 'change them to black and white' and 'sepia' with a good 'photo software' (I use Photoshop) when you 'upload' them from the camera to your computer. Mine cost $329 ... you SHOULD be able to find one with a 'better zoom' (mine only does a 2x zoom, but I take 'close-ups' and not 'distance' with it) for under $400. The 'disk' that comes with it won't hold many pictures, though, and you'll need to buy a 'larger' one ... generally a 1 gigabyte if you are going to take A LOT OF PICTURES and decide which you want to keep after you get home and load them onto your computer. BE SURE to ask to see 'other brands' of camera, too, though ... and NEVER BUY A KODAK for anything but 'snapshots' ... they don't 'blow up' well at all ...

Fuji F20 $150, 6mp but excellent.

Anything over 6mp actually hurts your picture quality!!!!
