First of all I would have to be in the mood to buy a particular type or kind of wine. I have to be in the mood to buy Chianti so I buy it. Same way with Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Merlot. etc. etc. etc.
Once that was established I would scrutinize the alcoholic content to see how it compared with other wines of the same type. Then I would scrutinize where the grapes were grown as to whether the Wine came from South America, France, Napa Valley, etc. etc. etc.
If it were an interesting Bottle of Wine I was looking at and I never had that brand or Vineyard before or never had a wine from that country before - I would probably buy it.
Price would be the very last thing I would consider because I have bought many bottles of "Cheap" wine only to find that they were fantastic when I drunk them later on!
You do not have to spend an arm or a leg to find a good bottle of wine!
And you do not necessarily get a "Good Bottle" of wine simply because you pay a premium price for it!

Primary reasons:
1) Country or region it was from
2) Price
Other reasons include its age, what I will be drinking it with, and the presentation on the bottle (label appeal).
My family prefers its white wines from Australia and South Africa, and our reds from Italy or Chile.
We are not connaisseurs, but we believe that wine should be aged a bit before drinking, so we tend to buy ones that are at least 3 years old. We are into trying all different types so look for different vineyards to select from in the regions that we like.
Occasionally, we will buy ones from other regions, and have tried wines from France, Hungary, Canada, and Portugal.
As for price, it is rarely the cheapest one that we buy, but we don't go crazy paying a lot for one either.

1) recommendation from the wine shop.
2) country where it is from
I usually know what wines I do and don't like. Often times I want something different, so I will ask the person at the wine shop for something that is similar in style etc. to one I already know. So for example, say I like el felino malbec from argentina and I am having a bbq for dinner, they are out of the malbec, I would ask the wine shop person what might be comprable to that wine in both price and style. Might be a chilean carmenere instead of Argentina Malbec or a Tempranillo from spain. I don't really care about grape variety, as I drink a wide variety.
Price is not terribly important to me, but would be third.
