I honestly have no idea.

There seems to be some practical knowledge that babies are born with. Like if you throw something on a table, a dog will look under the table, thinking the object will fall through. But a baby won't. So babies understand that some objects are solid and that a table will stop a falling object.

In the human development class I'm taking, we've been talking about moral development and most theorists believe a child has no sense of morality until the age of 4.

I don't believe that babies inherit original sin. I have a hard time with Christian (and other) parents who believe that you have to punish a child and "tame them" before the age of three. They're not old enough to understand yet. That's the bonding time. Boundaries need to be set, but some people see babies as selfish and they want to "correct" the selfishness. Babies are not selfish. They have needs and they are completely dependent.

I don't know if there's any way to tell if babies are cognizant of God or not. I also don't know how the soul differs from the mind. Maybe it's the soul that holds some knowledge of God.

Interesting to think about, but there's really know way of proving or disproving it. Like so many other things....

No, everyone is born with a sense that there is some higher moral authority than our own selves.

“Lost in the hullabaloo over the neo-atheists is a quieter and potentially more illuminating debate. It is taking place not between science and religion but within science itself, specifically among the scientists studying the evolution of religion. These scholars tend to agree on one point: that religious belief is an outgrowth of brain architecture that evolved during early human history. What they disagree about is why a tendency to believe evolved, whether it was because belief itself was adaptive or because it was just an evolutionary byproduct, a mere consequence of some other adaptation in the evolution of the human brain.

Which is the better biological explanation for a belief in God -- evolutionary adaptation or neurological accident? Is there something about the cognitive functioning of humans that makes us receptive to belief in a supernatural deity? And if scientists are able to explain God, what then? Is explaining religion the same thing as explaining it away? Are the nonbelievers right, and is religion at its core an empty undertaking, or a misdirection, or a vestigial artifact of a primitive mind? Or are the believer’s right, and does the fact that we have the mental capacities for discerning God suggest that it was God who put them there?

In short, are we hard-wired to believe in God? And if we are, how and why did that happen?”

Babies lack the capability to form intelligent or mature observations or opinions therefore they are not able to hold what we call a "belief" babies do not know who God is when they are born. In fact they know nothing when they are fresh out of the womb so the answer is no, they are born without the belief of God as well as any beliefs at all.

Maybe it depends on how Caucasian you are. I'm part Spanish and Cherokee and I just existed in a neutral state reflective of my environment as a child; the reason why though I think I was born without this positive emotional feeling to offer (which seems to be indicative of God nature/belief) is because I am not an emotion-focused person; it seems too young of an experience for me. I am more interested in facts and wisdom rather than any type of feeling or belief. As for others, maybe it also depends on %of Caucasian heritage

Indoctrination is why so many believe in a God. Religions have become so successful because it is incorporated into a child's educational process. That is why it is so hard to walk away from a God belief even when your sense of reason or intellect say different.

Belief created from childhood are the hardest to walk away from. Even corporation realize this fact is why they are targeting children. Indoctrination sell a lot of product when it is has been attached to a person make up from childhood.

No it is learned. Its not possible for someone to be born with a belief. They are born w/o it and it is something they learn to believe in due to outside influences. It would be a lack of common sense to lead someone to believe that they are born with that "belief".

belief definition
n.
1. The mental act, condition, or habit of placing trust or confidence in another: My belief in you is as strong as ever.
2. Mental acceptance of and conviction in the truth, actuality, or validity of something: His explanation of what happened defies belief.
3. Something believed or accepted as true, especially a particular tenet or a body of tenets accepted by a group of persons.

We're born agnostic. We really have no thought of it,or a skewed one.I grew up around a fair amount of religion, and I remember thinking Jesus was a woman(I thought he was Mary),and I though Joseph was God.Thoughts like that make me realize the absurdity of how religion comes together.

I think the "God Gene" isn't nessecarily a God gene, but a gene in us to believe,or have a certain bit of metaphysical curiousity.

Edit:to scott_grant:You also see a history of sacrificing people to volcanoes, etc.,but we now look at those ideas as archaic.History tells us no truth, but what not to do.

I believe people are born with a blank slate. In other words, their mind is empty and completely vulnerable. At such a young age, they are unable to form beliefs or opinions about anything, especially god.

particular. even nevertheless that's needed understand that that's the artwork of the enemy, which began back interior the backyard. we've all had the veil pulled over our eyes, and it demands no longer "indoctrination", yet somewhat guidance. all and sundry has doubts bearing directly to the life of God, yet few are keen to put in the time to truly examine the information. that's added at a loss for words via the multiple doctrines preached today, to no longer point out the legalistic attitude to "faith", that's additionally commonly used. Atheism isn't the default attitude, yet somewhat the easy way around the issue. that's a lot extra convienient to dis-have faith than to have faith, and that i think of you could agree. i could recommend that in case you relatively have questions that could desire to be responded (and who would not), turn to the Bible. each little thing we, as a society, ever required is right there. attitude the Bible interior the right way, and what you will locate is a wealth of fact you will no longer locate everywhere else, and that's a fact that's easy. I had, at one time, a similar questions as you have, and a similar recommendations. My character demands that I easily have the information first, then make the alternative. That very attitude is what lead me to God, and that i thank Him each waking 2nd. I carry as fact that God attracts us right into a relationship with Him, and makes available any know-how we could require to reinforce that relationship. i've got faith that that's real on your case. The Bible tells us that Jesus spoke the words "seek for Me and you shall locate me". the actual trick is to enable bypass of what you think of you recognize, and open your self as much as the potential of something previous what you could think of on your natual features. I pray to your fulfillment interior the pursuit of real know-how. Be properly, and be blessed.
