Im moving into either a new apartment or new house in about a month, and I've been wanting a puppy for the past 7 years but havnt been able to get one, until now. My question is,
what breed of dog would be a good inside dog and first pet?
I really LOVE pugs, but they have a lot of health issues.
And I also like puggles, but Im not sure about the health problems they have. Also, keep in mind im only 14, and I want a puppy, one that will stay small,
no bigger than a pug. Thanks.

Erica

I think you should go for the pug. They are so loveable and make great apartment dogs. Don't let people scare you about the health problems. I have an Englilsh bulldog, whi is a relative of the pug, and he doesn't have any of the respiratory or joint problems people always say bulldogs have. If you take good care of your pug and give him the proper nutrition and regular visits to the vet, he'll be fine.

If you really want a pug, then look for a good breeder that screens parents for health problems, especially respiratory problems before breeding them and provides a health guarantee for their puppies. A well-bred pug will be less likely to have health problems in the long run and you'll be getting exactly what you want.
Puggles are mixed breed dogs being bred by people who are basically taking two dogs of different breeds and selling the puppies because they are trendy - it's really not responsible breeding. These people are really more interested in making money than breeding healthy dogs. There will be a lot of variability in the puppies even in the same litter because some will be more like pugs and others will be more like beagles. In my experience health is not the primary concern of most of these breeders because the parents are usually not screened for health beforehand and they are not selecting the best dogs of each breed as breeding stock.
Instead of buying a puggle, you'd be better off going to a shelter and adopting a mixed breed dog that you like and you'll spend a lot less money and you'll be getting basically the same thing and saving a life.

A puggle is a mutt. The "Breeders" give them a designer name to attract buyers. Those individuals who are producing mutts and dubbing them with "Designer dog" names are motivated solely by greed and are not only perpetrating an unscrupulous scam on the public, but doing harm to the very dogs they breed. They do NO health screenings or genetic testing at all. They do not even breed to a standard, (because there is none). In the case, for example, of the "Puggle", they are risking the very lives of the dogs they produce by virtue of the breeds they are crossing (pug + beagle). A brachycephalic dog, (such as a pug) with the lung power and prey drive of a beagle would be in serious danger or dropping dead while playing on a hot day. Those "breeders" are very adamant in perpetuating the lie that "mutts are healthier", yet these puggles are already exhibiting epilepsy (a disease that has virtually been eradicated in the lines of responsible beagle breeders), before the age of one and a defect where the bones break very easily and do not properly heal. They don't guarantee to take back their dogs, so these sick animals are now growing in numbers in shelters. By the way, they charge more for a "puggle", (anywhere from $1200-$2,000.00) than a beagle pup from a responsible breeder would cost.

There are a lot of reports that say that pugs have many health issues... however, I have had 1 or more pugs in my family for the past 33 years and we have never run across any of the issues that they warn about! 1 of them even lived to be 14! I love pugs! They are fabulous small dogs and I can't imagine my life without one in it!!! I say that if you love pugs, get yourself a pug, you won't regret it! They are terrific indoors and great with ALL people!

As long as you keep the pugs inside and not outside much they do fine. I have two and they are great and not a bit of health problems. My family has pugs and we all are very pleased with them I have two (as i said before) my parents have two, my aunt has one and so does my cousin. We are are a pug family and they really are loving and sweet and very playful. I think that you would be very happy with a pug. I'm not sure where you are located but go to werpugsrus.com that is where me and my parents got our babies from.

Pugs are small dogs but tons of energy! Something like a Bison Frees (spelling- sorry), maybe a Westy? Westy's are pretty calm once they grow up a bit and are a perfect size for an apartment.

Get a cat instead. It is not fair to a dog to be locked up in an apartment all day while you are at school, and your parent working. (How would you like that????) They can get very distructive..... you can come home and every piece of upholstered furniture will be trashed, or peeeeeed on. Get a cat, hon, or two.... they keep each other company, are delighted when you come home, and generally aren't resentful to be left alone during the day.......
