If God were here wouldn't he have the bare minimum for survival and give all other wealth and possessions to the needy? So, if you are Christ-like, shouldn't you take a vow of poverty?

My point being...to be Christian is to be "like Christ". Christ would give everything he had to help others...so all Christians should be poor. :-)

Yes. Driving an expensive car when you could just as easily drive a non-expensive car is a sin according to the Bible. It is a prime example of the love of money. If you have money and buy a regular car, that's just using money to get what you need; if you buy an expensive car, that shows you LOVE money. Also, if you attend a church that looks like a cathedral with a cinema-sized TV and super sound system, that proves that you LOVE money, for if you didn't LOVE money, you could just as easily attend mass in a small wooden shack and get the same fulfillment out of it.

Yes, if you were truly called to follow Christ in that way. But there is more to being Christ like then poverty.

We should not ever put material things above our love for Christ and we should be willing to give it all up if that is what he asked us to do. The young rich man in the Bible kept all the commandments, did all the good religious things, but when Jesus said sell everything you own...he couldn't do it.

There are many Christians who are not at that point either...being a Christian isn't a magic trick...it's a journey. Some things you think you understand at the beginning of your journey are revealed to you as you mature in your faith. Things that didn't seem important become important and vice versa.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Christ nor any of the other disciples was poor. In fact, Judas was the designated money holder for the group. There are many admonishments in the Bible against letting money be your god, but nothing that says a follower of Christ has to take a vow of poverty.

If followers of Christ were supposed to live in poverty, what kind of an advertisement would that be for Christianity? Who in their right mind would look upon a homeless, penniless, hungry person and say, "Whatever he's got, I want!" No one! Many of the "needy" I see are needy due to their own fault -- drugs, alcohol, no education, spending their money on foolish stuff. Why would God want me to give my hard earned money to people like that? Heck, even Jesus didn't let people take advantage of him!

If we were supposed to give away everything to the needy and live a life of poverty, how would the Church survive? God DID tell us to tithe 10% of our earnings to the Church, so wouldn't it be in His (and Christianity's) best interest for us to be successful and earn a lot of money?

Christ chose people of all "classes" to work for Him. How can a poor man testify to a rich man. And how can a rich man testify to a poor man. How can someone who has never struggled with addiction testify to an alcoholic or drug addict? To be Christ-like is to meet people where they are at, according to the gifts God has given them. To be Christ-like is to love others. Period. And as far as poverty goes, Jesus never said we had to be poor. He did say, however, that if we have more than we need and see a brother (or sister) who has nothing, that we should give that person the extra that we have.

Also, it depends on how you define wealth. God chose the poor people of the earth to be rich in faith. I would much rather be rich in faith than to be rich in material possessions. He also chose the weaker things and people of the earth to confound the wise.

The way God works is too intelligent for man to fully comprehend. That is why the Christian must live their life in faith. They must have faith that God is in control of everything and that everything will work out according to His purpose. And, if anyone truly loves God, they will desire His will above all things, even if it means their own circumstances aren't all that great.

And as far as taking a vow of poverty goes, Jesus warned us to not take any oaths at all, regarding poverty or anything else.

Peace.

Poor baby, someone has used religion as a weapon around you....

Isn't it Peter 4;39 that says anyone driving expensive cars is going to hell?

A cheap car can be expensive... The Old Testament Law was broken as was the way God deals with men.
If you feel a conviction regarding stuff and money, then You need to take a vow of poverty, sell your computer, and shut off your internet service....

Bless

In 1925 Bruce Barton wrote an enormously popular book called "The Man Nobody Knows." He portrayed Jesus Christ as the first modern businessman, and an advertising and marketing genius. That is, he had a product and he knew how to sell it. Take twelve men from the bottom ranks of society and forge a great organization. Interesting, huh?

Disagree! To 'get by on 'bare minimum' may advertise poverty to others, so why would they want to model that example? (Can they not do that without Christ)?

I wonder who'll get sent to hell first?

a) Christians with expensive cars, or

b) So-called Christians (like our President) who lie, cheat, steal, take bribes, and generally F**k the entire country, for his own ends. Hmmm.

God is not christ, he never said he was god. Said he was the son of god. Anyway, who says if there was a god, and his son came down from wherever that he would give a damn about what type of car people drove? If there was a god and he came down here, why wouldn't he just fix all the suffering and hunger, there would be no "needy".
