I had lived and worked in Indiana from Jan. to Apr. of last year and moved to Texas and worked there from Apr. to Dec. of last year. When I used online my tax return tool to calcuate my state tax, it showed that I owe $400. Is this reasonable? I don't understand why I owe to Indiana even though I only lived there for 4 months last year. Please give me some feedback.

Did you have withholding from Indiana? Depending upon your earnings and withholding, it is possible. Are you counting all of your earnings (including TX) in your calculations for IN? If you are that is why you are showing such a balance due.....

good luck & bless

There's no way to answer your question from the information provided. IN can only tax you for the income you earned until you moved to TX. It's possible that you're filing the wrong return or you are listing all of your income on the IN return. Make sure that you're preparing a part-year return and that you only list the income earned while you were living or working in IN.

You have file taxes in the state that you claim residency in. from there the paper work will tell you how to file, for when you worked out of your home state
for some reason the other States charge non-residents that work in their state more
no that doesn't sound unreasonable
you may be able to claim some sort of" rental rebate "though the state where you stayed and worked for a few months though
