I'm thinking about buying pet insurance, it seems cheaper to pay small fee a month versus paying for each doctor visit, ER visits, shots, and surgeries.

Is it cheaper to buy pet insurance tho? What companies do you recommend?

I looked into pet insurance as well. However after researching several companies I decided opening a savings account for my pets was a better option.

With most of the pet insurance companies you are required to pay for everything up front. They reimburse you later. So you'd still need the money up front.

With a savings account, I just deposit what I would spend in insurance premiums every month into the account. This way I get interest on my money to. Maybe you'll be lucky and never need an expensive surgery for your pet. If you have a savings account for them, you'll still be prepared, but you won't be throwing away money every month for something you may rarely use.

We have our pet insurance through vpi pet insurance. www.petinsurance.com is the website and they will give you free quotes. We have 3 dogs and a cat and the pet insurance has been worth it. We pay between $100 and $200 a year for each of them for the standard plan. We still have to pay the vet in full when we go, but then we submit the insurance claim and they reimburse a portion of the cost. For example, our beagle mix had a nasty case of pancreatitis and had to be hospitalized. The vet bills were over $1300.00 and we got about $750.00 of that reimbursed to us. I have been very happy with their customer service and also the speed that they process my claims. Hope this helps. I have looked for the same coverage through a couple of companies and have found VPI to be the cheapest.

I researched it a few years ago and came to the conclusion that it wasn't cost effective. The only time it might pay off is if your dog or cat had catastrophic injuries and required surgery or if it developed a costly long-term illness such as diabetes or cancer. And the sad reality is animals with cancer and diabetes usually don't have as good a long-term prognosis as humans with these diseases (though this is getting better with better treatments), so long-term isn't all that long-term most of the time anyway.

Consumer Reports several years ago also did a report on it and reached the same conclusion. I don't have a link because their online service is subscription only and I get the magazine.

Based on these reasons, I passed on it.
