I'm a smoker yet I do agree that second hand smoke isn't fair on non-smokers. And I agree that smoking in restaurants should be banned, even as a smoker it's not nice when someone at the table lights up when you're eating a meal. However, I think it would have been better if they'd allowed some pubs to have a 'smoking licence', that way people can choose whether to go to a 'smoking' pub or not. It's a bit annoying there was a total ban and everyone, even non-smokers, should be aware - what next? Will they ban fat people from going to mcdonalds cus it's not good for you? Will they ban young boys from having cars because they are most likely to have accidents? Forget Big Brother is watching you - Big Nanny is alive and well and she's gonna kick our asses if we don't stand up for being allowed to make our choices....

I'm a non-smoker and the way I see it it should be the businesses choice.People still have the freedom to go there but you can decide not to go to that establishment. The only exceptions to this should be grocery stores and government buildings places you have to share with everyone. Banning people from smoking in all public places is taking away their liberty and pursuit of happiness. Second hand smoke is a killer I will agree to that but at the same if I decide to have lunch at a place were pepople smoke I can easily leave . You don't have to eat in a smoking restaurant yet you want to take away the smokers right to eat where they please. Take rights away from one and give to another when will it stop. Its ok until it effects you. I am allergic to smoke but I am not a smoking advocate I am a human rights advocate and Americans have been giving up their rights since the civil war.

I like it, I live with smokers and I get enough smoke at home and don't need more of it in the rest of my life. I do have a problem when people say that they want to ban smoking in private places like your car or your home. Those are your property and if everyone around you doesn't have a problem then you should be able to do it, BUT if you home/car is your work then it should count as a public place and have a smoke free zone where your clients can be with out smoke.

It's fair enough to ban smoking in public places but what do you all want to see banned next....I smoke and i think i have as much right to use the public facilities as the non smokers and most public buildings don't allow smoking anyway..pubs and restaurants should be allowed to choose and as for the answers on here that are saying that passive smoking is a killer don't any of you realise that any pollutant you breath in will affect you in some way...car pollution is probably more to blame for lung diseases than anything but i doubt you would all give up your precious cars...how many people realise that your simple every day household aids like fly sprays are poison ..i've known people who spray a fly with nearly a whole can of the stuff....banning smoking will not stop lung diseases

From a personal perspective. A good thing, I am a non smoker who actually stopped going to pubs a few years back because I was fed up of the sore throat and phlemy lungs I used to get along with having to shower when I got home to remove the smell. Sadly the option not to breath isn't really there.
I can see that there may be a dip in trade but it has been shown that after a while the trade does in fact increase after a couple of years. I do recognise these may well be lean years for the pubs. At the same time I can recognise that some smokers truly enjoy smoking and assoiciate it with a trip to the pub.

At first I was against it, even though I'm a non-smoker, because I thought it was a violation of basic human rights. After about a month, however, I noticed how nice it was to go to a bar or club and not come home reeking of smoke, with a sore throat and itchy eyes. Now I am a major proponent of the ban.

I am not a smoker, but I think the ban is unfair. I think the business owner should be able to decide if they want a smoking or non smoking establishment. I believe non smokers like me, can just go some where else, if we don't want to be around smokers. What if I don't like to be around people who perfume? What if I say it makes me choke, and I am allergic to perfume. Should the government ban people from wearing perfume, so I can go anywhere I want to go? It is a hazard to my health and the health of everyone else who is allergic to perfume. I just would not go somewhere that made me feel ill or uncomfortable. I just don't get all the cry baby non smokers. They should worry about the rude and filthy smokers who throw their cigarette butts outside instead. That is a real hazzard and eyesore.

I am all for the smoking ban. I do not smoke and do not appreciate going into a public place and being subjected to the smoke. I have asthma and so does my son. the smoke makes it worse.

I think it's right on!! I think it's only fair to be able to decide if you want to smoke or not. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a nice little area designated for smokers, but really it's an important thing simply for the workers in these restaurants, and clubs, because they have to breathe that air all the time, and second hand is worse than smoking the darn thing yourself! Woo Hoo!! Bring on the ban!!

No arguments about the fact that smoking is harmful to everyone. Not just the smoker .
The ban is a necessary one. Smoking should be allowed only in clearly demarcated areas or private places meant for it.
