listen to music
listen to an interactive program with a combination of inspiring music and someone to preiodically tell you how many miles you've run, where your heart rate and pulse should be, and/or how much further you have to go with some words of encouragement along the way
listen to audio of your favorite book(s) so you can focus on the story/reader more than the running
listen to talk radio and/or audio commentary. i do that at work just to make the day go by faster and keep me entertained when it gets slow and boring
take other routes that are scenic, new and different so every running experience isnt the same. for example, drive out to nearby cities/locations and find places you can run like their parks, lakes, downtown areas, open fields, interesting neighborhoods, even a public school with an outdoor track. that's always fun to do when their teams have practices open for the public to watch and probably safer because you wont be alone. and if anyone does try anything you know you'll have some tough, strong, testosterone driven guys around to protect you.
get a friend or group to run with you. it will keep you motivated and push you to continue with everyone else. plus you'll all be able to cheer each other on when your finished and maybe even have energy and time for some great conversations during the jog.
think about the triathalon and visualize what it will be like when you participate. and think about your health and all the benefits of running.
get a dog to run with you but make sure they are healthy enough and fully hydrated to keep up with you.
good luck!

If you do not enjoy running, why do it? I cycle and I enjoy it, so I can not wait to get on the bike and get out there. I have done marathons and small triathlons and the running was also a pain. I just got to the point that I make it to cycling events only now. I enjoy it much more, its low impact - well you know as you triathlon. There are many ways to stay in shape. I am 50 and running sucks even worse then it ever has. Cycling, my own pace, low impact and fun.
If you do want to continue running, get your mind right, wrap you mind around it. Hash out the day, philosophize, actively think while running.
Resist the urge to plug into an MP3 or any other device that impedes your ability hear traffic as this is very dangerous. Besides why have someone Else's thoughts driven into your head through music at a time that you could devote to thinking or problem solving.
I go to the gym and it is shame full how human beings have become anti social and discourteous because they are plugged into an MP3. No excuse me, or pardon me, or hello or any sort of greeting. No courtesy. Yes the age of romance is dead.

You might need an ipod or mp3 so you can listen to music. I enjoy the mindless exercise. I don't have to think about work or life or family. I just enjoy doing something that does not require a lot of thought for a short time each day.

Maybe you should bring a friend jogging with you. if you dont feel like doing that if you have an ipod, put on boring music and think about how boring that is compared to the running.

Running isn't for everyone. And most orthopedic surgeon's office are populated with people who have done it for a long time and their knees have given out. However, if you must do it, the other answers about listening to music are good.

Take the scenic route and I don t mean a trail in the middle of the woods, it can be through an interesting neighborhood or a historic park.
