I carry my glock just about everywhere i go (not to school though) it's light....almost indestructible, almost as hard as diamond, even comes in handy for me to use at night..
my .38 magnum revolver on the other hand....i think it's too big...-_-...too loud..and sticks outta my holster under my jacket when i carry it around, and even people notice the thing 0_0

you own two guns and your asking about size? were the gifts or something..
Anyways the best gun for self defense is the one YOU shoot best, be it a .22 or 12 ga shotgun...whatever.
When the time comes to use it, your GOING to be under a ton of stress and you are expected to opperate it flawlessly AND aim it well enough to bring down the villan. Get crazy and get a 1911 and for some reason its too complicated for you, 45's have too much recoil for you, dunno how to aim it worth a darn, and you just pi$$ed off the bad dude and now he is going to sodomize you and steal your pretty gun. no...go out and use different guns, use friends guns, join a gun club and get an idea on what YOU shoot and understand best and go with it.
If you need a suggestion on where to start I hear double action revolvers are great for personal conceled protection in 9mm up to .45 cal (even bigger if you can take it) enuff punch that nobody can really complain and probably the simplest mechanics that it will be least likely to fowl up durring go time. (Personaly i could NEVER hit anything with a revolver, i dont know why i just totaly suck at it but then again im an idiot)
7-6 inches isnt small, if its for concealed carry sum dudes would consider that way too big. Some concealed 1911's come in 3 inches i belive, a mans gun that small and your askin about 6-7 inches hehe.
GO JOE!

What is wrong with the Glock Mode 23 you are already carrying? What is a .38 Magnum? Do you mean a .357 Magnum (that also shoots .38 Special ammo), or do you mean a .38 Super??? Inquirying minds want to know.
Good luck.

A gun that you are comfortable with and can handle. Go to a good gun range and rent a few guns to check them out. Everyone these days makes a gun that is quite easy to conceal. Even my 45 ultra compact is hardly bigger than my 380. I have a Kel-Tec P-11 (9mm) that is perfect for my pocket. Everyone likes whatever they happen to have, so you'll never get a unanimous response. Carry your Glock if you like it. Oh yeah, did you mean 38 special?

I think that you know better. A .38 magnum?? No such thing. A .45 ACP compact is a good choice.

The best gun?? something that you can get out quicker than a hurry when crap hits the fan, that is the best gun to have. Concentrate more on your holster and drawing techniques rather than the caliber or model of your gun

If you like the Glock and just want to go smaller, check out the Kahr PM9. Only six rounds, but a lot slimmer than the Glock.
