When you read this article about athiests and the split in the athiest movement?

And does this mean Christians can start calling certain athiests 'fundies'?

Atheist. Atheist.

There isn't one atheist movement, with doctrines to sign up to, or be excommunicated from, so it can hardly split the way...

There's definitely a range of opinion amongst atheists on how to see religion. But that's allowed!
Personally I find Richard Dawkins excessively bitter and impolite, no matter how good some of his observations and arguments are.

"Fundie" atheists, possibly. "Evangelical" atheists, certainly!

Atheist movement? I didn't get that memo.

Ugh, "New Atheism," "New Humanism," and all that crap. It's just more labels.

Really, it's not an atheist "doctrine" to call God psychotic. That's one thing these people need to figure out. But then, they're probably also the same morons that rely on terms like "conservative" and "liberal" in our politics.

Everyone has his own opinion. I suppose that some people think atheists need to be their own group since there are groups for Christians, Muslims, and Hindus. I guess it's easier to point a finger at a faceless group than to acknowledge what one person says.

That is not as disturbing in the split of the Akringleist movement. That is people who don't believe in Kris Kringle (aka: Santa Claus)

But hey, you can call anyone anything you want. That doesn't make it true.
An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in god. There can be no split there. Anything extra does not mean they are a different group of atheists.

This is like saying "some atheists like peanut butter, and some don't, and that means they are 2 denominations".

Anyone who's read the various Atheists here with a halfway open mind knows that there are varying levels of fervor.

"Epstein calls them "atheist fundamentalists." He sees them as rigid in their dogma, and as intolerant as some of the faith leaders with whom atheists share the most obvious differences."

Yeah - the same can be said for ANY philosophy or religion. Who was naive enough to think that atheists were immune to the foibles that make up "human differences"?

Jan - if a house divided against itself cannot stand, when is Christianity coming tumbling down amidst the myriad of its denominations?

I think militant atheist is far more applicable than fundies.

Jan P:
"Jesus said a house divided against itself cannot stand."

There are over 10,000 sects of christianity. And each one thinks the others are nuts.

Hypocrite.

I do agree that there are fundamentalist atheists, but I do not agree that there is an atheist movement. Its too difficult to herd cats.

Would it be proper to refer to these as "denominations of Atheism?"
