If we all need to cut our use of greenhouse gasses why do we not impose a high import duty rate on countries whose greenhouse gas emissons are high. Then when they lower their emissions we could lower our import rates.

That is EXACTLY what France is proposing to do to the U.S. France says that since they have agreed to be bound by the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol and since they will miss their targets, they will have to pay BIG money to countries like China, which are not required to meet any reduction goals, so they plan to get the money by slapping big import taxes on U.S. goods sold in France since the US is not participating the in Kyoto Protocol.

If you want to do something good for the environment -remember to VOTE! If enough of us say we want things to change for the better - cleaner air, water, energy, etc. then you will see a difference.

Unfortunately the USA is the #1 CO2 generator - so I suggest we all go a low carbon diet.

Older people VOTE and they're afraid of change, so it's important that the the younger people get out there and vote too. Especially with the baby boomers getting ready to retire. If their retirement funds are all tied up in oil and gas guess how they are going to vote. I can only hope that they roll it all over into money markets or CDs.

That is a great Idea and I have been saying that for months now. The politicians have to do something like this. I guess a petition would be a good place to start. Then again people that shop at dollar stores would probably frown on this because Dollar stores get most of their crap from China and China is the biggest polluter. This should help create employment at environmentally friendly factories.

And mess up the cosy relationship the special interests have exporting our manufacturing jobs to China?

Actually, you're idea is a good one--but in today's climate where "free trade" has gone beyond a generally sound policy and become virtually a religious belief, it's a non-starter.

Because the #1 polluter is the USA (25% of world).

The US (and Canada) has to do its homework before blaming China or India. Sadly I don't think North-Americans will ever face their responsibilities..

Oh well, Canada can take quite a lot of warming!

That sounds great. In fact let's just stop importing from them. Then you can do without your computer, your TV, the internet, your MP3 player and your cell phone. Sound good ?

That would be economic suicide for the US... reason being that currently, we are the #1 emitter of greenhouse gases.

Exactly what do you think this would achieve, other than raising the price of goods to all of us?

We need to tax people that wear blue socks. When they start wearing yellow socks we'll eliminate that tax.

Hey, it makes as much sense as your argument.
