Personally, as far as I know, I have never seen a ghost before. The assumption is that a ghost is something ethereal and transparent- not solid, like a "real" person.

I haven't ever seen one, but I do believe that they exist. But what are they? Where do they come from?

What can explain their existence, especially if the spirits of the dead are supposed to end up in either heaven or hell? Does that mean that heaven and hell are all around us?

Some believe that ghosts are phenomena that can occur after a person's death if it was untimely or violent; they are more or less trapped on this plane of existence because they are not ready to move on due to unfinished business or revenge. Some think that this phenomena happens when a person dies in a locale that is near geological formations containing high concentrations of quartz or other crystal like mineral deposits and may "record" a persons life energy as it emanates at death in the crystaline molecular structure and gets "replayed" under conditions in the environment such as electromagnetic fluctuations from the sun or in Earth's magnetic fields. "heaven and hell around us" opens the door to the discussion of multiple planes of existence in the same space but not perceivable by its intelligent or at least sentient beings due to evolutionary developments in their perceptual senses which may explain why some people seem to be more sensitive than others in being able to perceive on some levels this kind of activity. Judeo-Christian beliefs about spirits usually involves angelic manifestations; demonic or divine that are here to help or mislead. The interesting point to me is that all cultures have as part of their world view the existence of paranormal manifestations described as ghosts. Remember "there be more in heaven and earth" than our philosophy (search for truth) can encompass.

Why do you believe they exist? There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest their existence; they're a construct of human imagination, just like dragons, trolls, gnomes, goblins, demons and gods.

If you want to speculate on the realm of fantasy, different religions assign different fates to souls; so what if one particular religion doesn't mesh with them?

I believe that what people think are "ghosts" are actually demons impersonating real people. The Bible tells us that "the dead know not anything". People do not float around as spirits after they die, but sleep in the grave until Christ returns to resurrect them.
