#1 not a snake, a serpent. The Ancient Hebrew words are different for snake and serpent, and the word for serpent is that which describes the *animal* in Genesis 3.
#2 if you look at the context, obviously it was not all that uncommon for things to talk to Adam and Eve. You don't see them running away screaming, as any sane human would do if suddenly an animal started talking to you. Therefore it is pretty safe to assume that there were things going on in the Garden of Eden which we don't necessarily understand today.
#3 why do people always point to this passage and try to disprove the Bible through it? You won't get me to recant or stumble because you point out a talking animal. I mean come on, if I believe in an omnipotent God, obviously I'm going to believe He can make an animal who could talk if He so desired.

No, snakes can't talk,...unless God wills one to. The "snake" in the garden in Gen 3:1 wasn't a real snake. ol satan has many names for the roles he plays throughout time..... Lucifer, the serpent, the adversary, the beast, the dragon, the anti-christ...and so on. The serpent was his name and the type of role he plays in Gen. ...his name coming from the hissing sound he makes when he whispers, w(hissss)pers in ones ear.

It can't make the 'w' sound! Nor can my Grandmother. Maybe all snakes are Scandinavian?
~Morg~
(who is fairly certain her Grandmother is not a snake)

Snakes don't have ears, vocal cords, or a tounge capable to deforming to contour the palet.
Snakes can not speak, and could not hear their own words even if they did.

I don't know how it makes the sound, but it usually does it when mentioning its middle initial.
