A mutt. Until recently when mixes were done deliberately and became popular, any mix of two or more types of dogs were mutts. A lot of mutts were not very distinguished, but some were. I had a female that was a mix of shetland sheep dog and German shepherd, and she was a beautiful and smart animal.
I think the mix that started this "mutt craze" was a cockapoo - part cocker spaniel and part poodle. They're cute, and they retain the poodle's rep for low allergenic fur.
Well, it's better that a dog not be "pure bred" because these overbred dogs have all kinds of defects and diseases as a result of lack of genetic variety.
