Do they serve a purpose? Or are they left overs from our evolutionary ancestors?

Glenoid cavity keeps the head of humerus in situ. Deltoid, supraspinatus, infra spinatus and teres major are muscles arising from scapula inserted into humerus thus facilitating abduction and rotation of arm.
Our shoulder blade works maximum when we swim.
We are more evolved with scapulae.

Over the course of evolution, humans have discarded whatever structure we do not require and are still in the process of doing so. Shoulder blades (the scapula, to be precise), in a way, do serve a purpose. They mainly serve as a flat surface for the attachment muscles. So they are pretty important. There may be a host of other reasons as to why they are useful, but I've listed the one i thought was the most important. Hope this helps.
Cheers!

No, they're very much needed for mechanical reasons. The glenoid is part of the scapula, and it's one side of the shoulder joint. Your arm has to attach to something. The trapezii and lats have their uses as well.

If you think about it, we don't use them much today - in "civilized" humanity, but think back to when you had to tote a hundred pounds of supplies over a distance of 100 miles.

They'd come in quick handly indeed in protecting vital skeltal structure then!

Why do we have toes, a tailbone, fingernails, a gall bladder, and feet with skin that is unsuited to the ground...?

It's where our wings would be had we not been created "but little lower than the angels."
