It is short for Vehicle Identifcation Number it is used world wide. (one of the few things you will ever see every country agree on) it contains 17 letters and numbers. the first being the country of orgin the second being who made it. Rather them me typing this all out. This site has to be one of the best I have see that explains the who darn world wide system. It's the vehicle identification number of a car.
It is stamped on the car's chassis plate & is shown on the car's documents.
This is so that a car can be identified regardless of the registration plates that it has fitted.
If you are buying a car, you need to check that the VIN is the same on both the documents & the chassis plate & make sure that the plate does not look tampered with.

A VIN is a vehicle identification number, so saying VIN number is redundant. It is a unique identifier for your vehicle.

vehicle identification number located on the front dash u must look thru the windsheild to see the tag imbedded in the dash write down all letters and numbers and double check some models have extra ones on driver side door frame at bottom under the hood on the engine
if u have a previous registration for the vehicle u will find it on the the form

A series of 17 numbers and letters when deciphered, can tell you the make, model, year and the country it was manufactured in.

Example 1HGCG2253WA028912
This car is a 1998 Honda Accord EX-V6 coupe made in the U.S.

1st # is 1: Made in U.S.
2nd and 3rd is HG: Honda
4-9: CG2253 is the model
10th is the year:W=1998
11th not sure:A
12-17 is the serial number 028912
