They are hoaxes. The people who faked them have publicly admitted they did it and shown how they did it.

Generally, the scientific community regards them as hoaxes--and certainly some of them are.

Personally, I'm not convinced. Not because I think there's "extra-dimensional beings" making them or soem such. But so far, no one has been able to show HOW many of the more spectacular crop circles were made. I'm inclined to tink these are hoaxes as well--but until someone shows how they were formed, the jury's still out.

Most scientists don't.

The problem is that almost all of the really big and fancy ones have been demonstrated to be caused by a small group of people.

Since people tend to make them, they are better studied as art than science.
