ok, let me explain this further cause your not understanding. I had a dog that ate onions and a couple days later she started to poop mucus like and red like blood. she wouldnt eat and she then she started to throw up and shaking. I took her to the vet and they tried to do everything they could. But her kidneys and liver were shutting down and she was pale, we had to let her go and the vet told us that it was because of the onions. but everyone else keeps telling me that the onions couldnt of done all this to her. I have been doing research about this and I cant find a single site that tells me the exact symptoms my dog had because of the onions. please help.

Onions cause anemia which is charictarized by weakness and pale to white gums...My cat had lukemia which also causes anemia and died from the anemia alone...As the anemia progressed she became very lathargic and uninterested in eating...It can also cause diareah. From my understanding with my cat there is no cure for anemia in pets and will adventually die....I am not sure, however, if this is the case with dogs....or if it will clear up once the onion is out of the system but anemia is a disease and a very serious one...Whether the onion is cooked or raw it is still poisioness to dogs, as well as garlic. Garlic, however, is not as poisioness as an onion....You should take your animal to the vet as soon as posible if you feel as if he might have eaten an onion, and if possible they may want to pump his stomach to get it out as quickly as possible.

Onions cause hemolytic anemia, which means that the red blood cells break down leaving the dog short of oxygen. Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. The condition generally improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion. The poisoning may occur a few days after the dog has eaten the onion. At first dogs affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhea, weakness and show little or no interest in food. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected dog's urine making it dark colored. The dog will experience shortness of breath because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number. Other symptoms are elevated body temperature, confusion, and increased heart rate. Seek veterinary care immediately. The quantity of onions, raw or cooked, required is high enough that dogs can generally tolerate small doses of onions without any problem and moderate amounts of onion without apparent signs of onion poisoning. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness.
While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness.

Most definetly you should not feed onion to your pet. Onion cause anemia. Which can be fatal in the worst case scenario. I would keep an eye on your dog, if it is only 1/2 an onion i doubt that this would be harmful, however i would keep an eye on her any way. Check for vomiting, lethargy and if you pull the corner of her mouth up check the colour of her gums, you want these to be pink, if they start to change colour and become pale then i would definetly consult a vet immediately. Im sure with that little amount she should be ok though. I am a vet nurse if this make you feel better.

Onions are toxic to dogs and cats: they cause anaemia. If you dog has received a toxic dose (not sure what this is, but probably as little as a whole onion) the signs of anaemia are weakness and pale gums.

If your dog has eaten onion please take him to a vet.

Man, I don't know. All of a sudden everything will "kill' your dog! I have had dogs for years, they have eaten onions and garlic, with out problems. And Chocolate which is supposed to be very bad for them, my sister's dog ate a whole 5lb box and was fine. I guess it just depends on the dog. If your dog ate an onion, and seems sick take him to the vet.
