Pilates is the way to go for tummy work outs. Yoga will only help you stretch and relax.
Lay flat on your back. Suck your stomach in so that there is no space between the floor and your back. Raise your legs together straight up in the air so that they are straight in a 90 degree angle infront of you. Then slowly lower the (keep them straight as you do this) and when you reach a point where it becomes hard to keep them still keep them there for 10 seconds then bring them back up and repeat.
The point is to find your point of control and work it. You are keeping you legs up and down with the strength of your abs so when you feel like your back will lift of the ground thats when you pause. That's your point of contol. MAKE SURE YOUR BACK IS ALWAYS FLUSHED TO THE GROUND.
Use a yoga mat if you have one so you don't hurt your back.
Do 3 sets of these with 12-24 reps. 3 times a week.
Good Luck! ;-) Pick up some pilates books....they will have many more moves like these to help with abs.

You are correct the cardio is the best way. You do really need to quit smoking, but that will be your desicion. Sit-ups or crunches are the best way to stregthen your stomach muscles. I started a few weeks ago & already have noticed a difference. Don't expect results overnight it will take time. But the main thing is you have the will power & commitment to see it through.
Best advice is to consult with a personal trainer or someone in that profession.
& good luck to both of us!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats, take 300-400 calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
5-8servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water a day
5-6 small meals instead of 3 big ones (breakfast is the most important - make sure to get complex carbs like whole wheat bread, oatmeal, fruit etc)
4-6 times a week cardio for 30-50min, light weight training, many reps
no junk food, no sodas, no alcohol, no white flour (cakes, cookies, white bread, pasta etc.), nothing high in sugar (ice cream)

do not drink beer or sodas, even diet sodas can give you a belly.
Yes you do need to do cardio, i was a light smoker when i started doing spinning cycling (cardio did help me quit), so smoking is not an excuse.
Crunches and leg raises are fantastic for losing belly fat, too.

the best thing you can do with your condition is this. Work your abs, use ab machines and keep working out. They have machines at the gym u can use to to work the sides of your stomach.

stomach crunches are great for toning up your stomach... you don't have to do alot - you can do them in sections, for example 30 in the morning, 30 in the evening to spread it out abit and make it easier on your asthma.

Well
You could do some crunches and pushups.
I doubt it'll hurt you as much as running a mile.
