You burn the same amount of calories for distance. You if you are running, of course you burn them faster. One way to burn more calories and feel like you are not working as hard is to set the treadmill to an incline and walk. Also, doing an interval workout is good, because it speeds up your metabolism throughout the workout. Do one minute or 30 seconds of running, then walk for two minutes, and then do another fast minute, and just repeat the cycle.

It may always be better to walk than to run on a treadmill.
When you idiotically run on a treadmill you can't see much of the World.
When you walk in your old surroundings or in new ones you may get many many sights and impressions which may enrich your vision and your knowledge and so also confirm your own participation in the World around you.
Even better would it be to walk because you have a formal errand of some sort, but just to walk down-town or out there in the country-side freely definitely uncommitted would be fine.

Do whatever you like to do... I'm in great shape and love bodybuilding, but I only walk on the treadmill... at 3.5 or 4mph I can go forever. Running isn't very enjoyable for me.
Walking is low impact and better on your knee's and spine. Running is more cardiovascular and better for your heart.

Both would be good for you, but you get the same benefits from a fast brisk walk without the jolting of running to your body.

I personally like running, I feel like I accomplish more. However if you walk, doing so at a fast pace will give great results as well.

I do a mix of both. walking is good for a warmup so you don't pull anything and running helps with your bones (as long as you don't overdo it) because the impact makes your body strengthen them after they are damaged (similar to muscles), you burn lots of calories, and it's good for your heart but if you run too much it is very harmful to your health.

if you are just starting it is better to walk
once you lose and get used to treadmill
then you can start running/start slow
then increase your rate/you should be able to talk
while runing without having to catch your breathe

Much better to wear roller skates. Less sweaty, and looks you get are so worth it.
