I forced myself to speak in tongues. I did not believe in it. I was raised Lutheran and I got saved at a Baptist Church when I was 19. Twenty years later I started attending a Penecostal Church called the Vineyard. They talked me into receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost. They told me that my life would be filled with joy and peace and that
I would quit drinking and smoking. I did not want to quit my addictions because I enjoyed them. I only wanted the joy and peace that I experienced earlier in my life. The Pastor asked me if I knew what I had. I said no. He said that I had the Holy Ghost and then he asked me if I wanted Him back, I said sure. So I received the Baptim of the Holy Ghost the next day because I wanted to get drunk and high one more time in case the Pastor was right, The next day at Church I received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost in front of the whole Church. I did not know that He expected me to speak in tongues. It took me over fifteen minutes just to come up withtwo words. He got a big smile and told me that I got it and to come up with some more words on the way home. I did and I felt good. I thought that I was making them up in my own mind, but the next day, I got the worse urge to smoke, so I broke down and bought a pack of ciggs and a six pack. I call ed the Pastor three days later and told him that I wasn't coming to his Church anymore because he lied to me. The Baptism did not work, He asked me if I prayed in tongues and I told him no and that it was not nessesary for me to pray in tongues. He replied that, "I had nothing to lose by doing so." He was right, I was a homeless bum addicted to everything. I was mad that it failed and I only began to pray in tongues later that night to prove the Pastor wrong. Afterwards, I felt posessed. I did not expect this. He was controling my head and my feet! I got scared and repented, then God revealed Himself to me and spoke to me. He gave me prophecies and God delivered me from ALL of my addictions and brought me a wife the very next day. All the prophecies, visions, and dreams came true. God took my desires for my addictions away as if I never did them! God has shown me that all the words that I made up were praising God in Hebrew! He also showed me that He came into my life, the moment I asked, not at the moment He manifested Himself to me. He was just preparing my body to be a dwelling place for His Spirit.
My advice for you is to read Luke 11:9-13. Then ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit because you have accepted His Son, Jesus, as your Lord and Savior. Speaking in tongues is a powerful gift which you should seek. The Bible says that when we speak in tongues, we do not speak to men, but we speak to God and we pray for what we ought. It also builds ourselves up Spiritually. Read 1 Corintians, Chapters 12-14 for better understanding. I pray that you will receive this wonderful gift from God. Please write me if you have anymore questions.

Speaking in Tongues The issue of Tongues is another controversial doctrine among Christian churches today. We believe the Bible, when properly and contextually interpreted on this subject is CRYSTAL CLEAR! Acts Chapter 2 is the precedent chapter for the topic of tongues. Therefore, ALL scriptures regarding tongues MUST be interpreted in light of the definition of tongues found in ACTS 2. Here it is CLEARLY laid out that BIBLICAL tongues is; the instantaneous, supernatural ability for a born again believer to be able to speak in a KNOWN language of the world (not gibberish or babbling or a "prayer language".) This gift is given by the Holy Spirit and is not intended to be given to all believers. The purpose of tongues is to bring glory to Jesus to those who may not otherwise understand the native language being spoken.
There MUST be an interpreter who will verify that the tongue spoken is a KNOWN TONGUE of the languages of men and the interpreter will also know the interpretation. We believe that the "TONGUES MOVEMENT" so prevalant in Christian circles today DOES NOT meet these clear, biblical criteria .
A tongue would be deemed biblical if it met the criteria previously discussed, found in Acts 2, as well as the criteria of I Corin 14 (one or two, three at the most speak in a BIBLICAL tongue in an ENTIRE worship service. That it be done decently and in order. That there be an interpreter for EACH instance of the use of a tongue. That the women NOT speak or interpret in tongues in a public worship service.) I Corinthians 14 is extremely clear on ALL these points!

No your not to be taught
and I've been in places (buildings)
where they tell you you must before
your are saved. So they show who how
to roll your tongue and consider this tongues.
NO WAY!
The bible specifically shows us we may get this
gift so every one may not have it. Thus it can not be
for salvation purposes 1Cor 14 one and two and
no more than three and not at one time but in sequence
and you go to a synagogue and here people all around
you glabeshimo habada gleshemo blabla bla piph
You can't get a paragraph out of three or four so called words Enter in the LIE.
It's not even for the Saints (saved) but for the unsaved and who's interpreting most of the time some assistant minister who its not for anyway. Enter the next LIE.
It also shows us it is a language Acts 2:4,7-11 So how can you get a word out of jibber jabber that no one from another tribe or country is suppose to understand

It is the initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who is speaking through you. It is not something you "learn" it is something you yield to. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is for all believers but they have to want the fullness of the Holy Spirit and ask for it. For some people it is hard to learn to yield completely to the Holy Spirit and therefore tongues does not manifest because they do not open their mouth and use their tongue as the Spirit gives them the language. It is not just "sounds" it is actual languages being spoken. These languages are not just known earth languages (although that has also happened) but they are heavenly languages not known on earth. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues is a powerful gift in the life of a believer. It is for worship and warfare. You don't seek "tongues" - you seek Jesus. The more you love and worship Jesus while asking to be Baptized in the Spirit, the closer you will come to receiving the gift. The Holy Spirit always magnifies Christ and our earthly languages are so inadequate to worship in depth, that is when the Holy Spirit comes and speaks through us in a new dimension to glorify Christ. It is a wonderful experience and a powerful tool in your spiritual life.

It is one of the least of the gifts. A person that has the gift to speak in tongues, should not do it without an interpreter to interpret, for it would be of no value.
It is a gift, and not something that you can learn.

I've seen people speak in tongues and always wondered about it. I believe it's something that just comes out when you are full of the holy spirit. I've never spoken in tongues but once when I was about 12. My house was being hit by a tornado and we were all huddled in the floor praying out loud. My mom says she heard me speaking in tongues. I can't specifically remember but I do remember not being able to stop what was coming out of my mouth and after that a wonderful sense of peace and calm. So I believe it's something God gives you rather that you learn

If it comes naturally it is from the Holy Spirit, and is a gift from God. If you really want the gift of speaking in tongues you can pray and ask for it.
This is the least of all the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Hi There.
Great question, and unfortunately one that has not yet been clearly answered.
First of all, it is important to note that speaking in tongues is the sign somebody has received the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:45-46, “And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.” For this reason, it is not something that can be made up. It comes as God’s sign to show you when you have received the Holy Spirit, and therefore cannot be made up when you feel like it.
Acts 2 says, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.”
Again, speaking in tongues is certainly not something that can be made up as it is not just vain babbling. It is God given.
But the most important point I would like to make is that you cannot receive the Holy Spirit without the evidence of speaking in tongues. It happens to everyone.
Zephaniah 3:9
For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may ALL call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent.
Mark 16:17
And these signs SHALL follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
1 Corinthians 14:18
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye ALL:
The purpose for tongues is that it is a pure language which, when you pray in it, builds you up in the faith. See Jude 1:20, Romans 8:26-27. God is no respecter of persons. This gift is for all. It is also to be used in the church in an ORDERLY manner as a sign for the unbelievers. See 1 Corinthians 14.
It may not happen the first time you pray, but keep praying until you get it! It is a promise! Luke 11:13, “ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”
Receiving the Holy Spirit must also be accompanied by repentance and water baptism for salvation. Acts 2:37-38, “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
John 3:5, “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
If you have done these things, and continue in the ways of the Lord, praise the Lord, you will have life eternal. John 8:31, “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;”

Speaking is tongues is one of the 9 spairitual gifts, Not all speak in tongues some may prophecy, But you don't have to speak in tongues as many pentacostal churches teaches, Aposle Paul said in 1st Cor. Chapter 12 There is diversities in the gift, Diversity of operation of the gifts, Paul goes on to say does all speak with tongues, No, does all prophecy, No. In my life of serving God, for 37 yrs. God palce that gift of tongues, in my life, & someone else will interpretate it, & sometimes, I have given interpretation for someone else that speaks in tongues, You don't have to learn it, God will use you if he has placed that gift in your life. I see no Apostles smacking someone in the face & say repeat after me, as many so call pentacostal does, By the way I am Apostolic Pentacost, that gift & any of the 9 spiritual gift, is to edify the Body of Christ.

Speaking in tongues is a gift of the Spirit listed in the Bible. It's a gift, but not everyone gets it. I enjoy speaking in tongues. It's humbling and takes faith, which pleases God. It's like a baby crying out and babbling, asking his mother for something. It's like being so full of emotion during prayer for something desperate that mere words can't do the subject justice. Technically, it's like "scatting" in jazz music. You just let your tongue go and say whatever comes. It's fun! Someone may even speak in a noted language that they're not familiar with, but that's a different miracle in itself. Maybe demonic people do this sort of thing too, but that doesn't mean that God can't use it. God is the source of all things, the devil is just a usurper, a copier. He can't create anything. There's demonic jazz and Godly jazz, demonic rock'n roll and Godly rock'n roll. You have to discern the spirit of it. I do think some of the Pentecostals get carried away, though. Some are like little children, playing with their father's gifts immaturely. Just because someone confesses Jesus doesn't mean they have the spirit of love and shows it. But, I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
You may not get this gift right away. Some people get other gifts. It depends on their faith and God's plan. In my opinion, and I believe Paul's also, it is not "proof" that you have the Holy Spirit. It may be, but not necessarily. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is literally being filled with the power of Love. God's love can be manifested in many ways, such as miracles, healings, prophecy, knowledge, wisdom, etc. Most of these gifts are much more beneficial to others than speaking in tongues. In 1Corinthians 13:1, Paul says, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love; I am as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal." In other words, "You may have this showy gift of speaking in a foreign language or babbling on like a baby but still be as shallow and selfish as they come." Now read 1Corinthians 14 and Paul goes on to say that he spoke in tongues a great deal but he would rather people prophesied or interpreted what the tongues meant. This would be for the benefit of others rather than the benefit of oneself. You don't have to learn it to be a loving Christian, but if you want it to benefit your own spiritual walk with the Lord, just ask for it. He'll give it to you in His good time. God bless you for asking!
