Here in Minnesota, they are trying to pass a bill to give gay/lesbian couples the right to visit each other in the hospital, where now, it is up to the discression of the hospital. Anti-gay activists are arguing that this will destroy the sanctity of marriage. are they saying it will make the divorce rate go up? or do they think that will open the doors for people to marry their sister or their dog? Here's a thought - let every adult in this coutry pick one significant other, no matter who it is or how they are related. That person would have all the same rights as a spouse. The same thing happens when someone dies, you always have the next of kin, and a person can have anyone they want if they put it in their will, so why not when we are alive?

It would not at all destroy marriage.

The divorce rate is at 50%. Why deny couples that will stay together the opportunity to be together?

Britney Spears (sorry to pick on her personally) has been married and then divorced, with no seriousness to the commitment at all (from what I can tell from the media). And yet people who have lived together for decades cannot get married/united/whatever, merely because they are the same gender.

To assume that homosexuals cannot make the same committment to another person as heterosexuals is flat-out prejudice, and I bet the marriage rate would increase (and the divorce rate would lessen) if they were allowed to marry.

My take on it: Civil unions for all, both heterosexual and homosexual. Don't use the term 'marriage' in a legislative sense at all. Leave the individual solemnizing of marriage up to each church, if churches are involved.

I would like to express the fact that, when I hear someone state that gay marriage will open the doors to others marrying their goats or furniture, I wish to poke them right in the eye!!

Its very simple - you cannot marry that which cannot consent. A child cannot consent, a goat cannot consent, your furniture cannot consent. If your sister does consent, well....youre just sick...

Otherwise, all these people calling to protect the sanctity of marriage are all people who have experienced at least one if not multiple divorces. How does THAT protect the sanctity of marriage?

I'd say that marriage is already pretty screwed.

Heterosexuals have a better than 50% divorce rate. They've taken what is promised to be a lifelong commitment and turned it into a matter of convienance. They've defiled it.

Time to let us homosexuals have a go at keeping this beautiful promise. Maybe we'll teach the heterosexuals a thing or two about what 'until death do us part' is SUPPOSED to mean.

The whole concept of civil unions being evil and the root of all marriage problems is insane. Marriage problems exist because too many people are do not look at all the facets of being married...the good AND the bad. Then they find out, oops...harder than I thought.... and bail. It comes down to personal responsibility.

If two consenting people wish to bind themselves legally to each other, why should Mr. and Mrs. right wing christian conservative get to say "ummmm...no we dont think so"? It's not like its any of their business. Too many people are sticking their noses in everyone else's lives and bedrooms. I have only one thing to say to those people: "Get the Hell Out!"

I don't see why we're making the gay/lesbian issue a matter of law at all. It is not for me, as a Christian, to decide if homosexuality is right or wrong, to bash on or give homosexuals a hard time if I do believe its wrong, or to try and stop them from having a full and happy life. It is my responsbility as a Christian to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ in love. It is up to those who hear the Gospel to choose what to believe and what to do about Him. That's it!

How can it possibly hurt it?

I have heard people say if gay marriage is legalized, churches will be forced to perform such weddings even if hey disagree with it. HOGWASH! Churches can choose to allow or deny marriage to anyone, and they do it every day.

Celebrities and no-fault divorce have done more to destroy marriage than homosexuals could. I say, let them marry, where's the harm?
