I have been disabled for 3 years now due to a degenerative disease but I am only 49. I would like to return to college and hopefully find a career that I could continue even with my disability. However financially it is impossible with only my Social Security income. Any ideas?

There are so many grants out there you could apply for. First, fill out the Pell grant. The maximum amount for that is $4000-$5000. There is also many other grants you can qualify for. First you have to fill out a fafsa though (Free application for federal student aide)

Depending on what type of benefit you receive (SSDI or SSI) you may be eligible for several incentives thru the Social Security Adm. Most likely you would be eligible for what is called a PASS plan (Plan for Achieving Self Support) This is a Social Security incentive to assist individuals with disabilities return to work and become independent. The Social Security Adm has what are call Work Incentives Coordinators you can find yours at the following http://www.socialsecurity.gov/redbook/eng/page10.htm
Another good resource for you would be to find your local Independent Living Center. They will offer information and referrals to services such as Vocational Rehabilitation as well as detailed information regarding your Social Security benefits and how those benefits will change when you return to work. You can find the closest Independent Living Center at http://www.ncil.org/

Have you tried going to the Department or Office of Vocational Rehabilitation in your area? It was created for disabled individuals like yourself to re enter the workforce. They even have a grant that can help you go to school. The number can be located in the blue pages of the telephone book under government services or by searching your state government website. Also, check with the college's office specializing in working with the disabled because they are a wealth of information. I will include some links that should help find some funding to attend college. Good luck!

u can apply for pell and loans.. Depending on cost of college, books, etc u MAY NOT get enough aid to go. As a freshman with FULL Pell and FULL grant is about $10000. I would talk to the office of rehab..they will pay tuition and part of books.. that's how I do it. GL
